Clinical Laboratory Coordinator

The Pathology Department is seeking a who under the supervision of the laboratory supervisor or Faculty/Principal Investigator performs a variety of both routine and complex clinical and research laboratory analyses. In the absence of a Laboratory Manager, acts as lead technical authority to other testing personnel in the laboratory and is responsible for the overall daily operation of the assigned laboratory including workload and personnel scheduling, quality control, inventory, equipment maintenance, and conformance with the divisional quality assurance program for the assigned lab. Work requires a professional level of knowledge to properly execute and analyze results, especially where results are abnormal or atypical. Specific duties may vary according to rotations. Responsible for monitoring the adherence to JHU, JHH, and departmental policies and procedures in the laboratories across all shifts. Assists with the development and administration of laboratory budgets. Performs other related administrative and professional duties. Required attendance position.

Specific Duties & Responsibilities

Actively participate in laboratory testing in the Immunofluorescence Laboratory including but not limited to accessioning, grossing of small specimens, frozen tissue sectioning, immunofluorescence staining procedures using both manual and automated methods. Daily activity of the lab including procedures and instrumentation, maintaining of daily documentation, status of a case or status of a project, billing outcomes as per regulations. Analytical ability to operate technical equipment, perform tests with the highest degree of accuracy and to relate tests results to a normal, healthy state and to the presence of disease. Participates in the specification, design, implementation, and modification of projects related to Immunofluorescence. Prepares test plan data to ensure quality and integrity. Training of new employees, workload management/staff scheduling, participates in review of staff performance, recruitment, interviewing and hiring decisions for laboratory personnel. Orients, trains, and develops staff of assigned laboratories. Performs quality assurance procedures, such as equipment monitoring and maintenance, antibody quality assurance and troubleshooting, reports discrepancies in quality assurance as per quality assurance procedures. Assists in the development and revision of lab policies and procedures. Responsible for preparation of assigned laboratory area for CLIA, CAP, The Joint Commission, and other regulatory reviews.

Special Knowledge, Skills, or Abilities 

Work requires precision and attention to detail. Analytical ability to operate technical equipment, perform tests with the highest degree of accuracy and to relate test results to a normal, healthy state and to the presence of disease. Ability to work independently, determining appropriate procedures and methods to obtain test results. Individual should have strong verbal and written communication, interpersonal and training skills. Must be able to communicate effectively with health care professionals and other hospital/university personnel. Must have the ability to read and interpret direction, both oral and written, organize and prioritize work and follow through on assignments. Must be able to work successfully as part of a team in a high volume, dynamic laboratory.

Work Environment

While performing the duties of this job, the employee may remain in a stationary position (sitting or standing) up to 65% of the time. Occasionally required to traverse throughout the laboratory or to retrieve equipment, supplies, or specimens from other locations on campus. The employee is required to operate computer keyboard, laboratory instruments, and small laboratory tools such as pipettes, cutting instruments, glass tubes, dishes, and/or slides. Constantly repositions self to perform duties at laboratory workstations, gathering specimens, and loading equipment. Prolonged vision requirements including viewing computer screen, paper reports/documents, charts and results. Visual acuity is required to distinguish fine gradation of color or structure and closely examine specimens (including via a microscope). Laboratory environment - Exposure to toxins and infectious agents exist, but potential for personal injury or harm is minimized if established safety and health precautions are followed. Working in laboratory where there may be discomforts due to odors, noise, temperature fluctuations, and working around lab equipment. May transport equipment and supplies usually less than 40 pounds from one area to another (in the laboratory or on campus). May be required to lift and/or move up to 50 pounds with proper training, or precautions/lifting aides (example: supply boxes or Formalin cubes). In some areas workspace is confined. Staff may be required to complete annual competency review, and must ensure compliance with Hospital Policy, Laboratory Policy & Procedure, Health, Safety & Environment regulations, and all applicable privacy & confidentiality laws/practices. Many department laboratories operate 24/7 with schedules on day, evening, or night shift. Rotating schedules which may include weekend work and holiday assignment. (Overtime possible when authorized/needed to meet business and patient needs). This is a Required Attendance position in the event of unexpected university closings including inclement weather or declared emergency, the employee in this position is required to report to work and/or remain at work and may be required to work additional hours.

Minimum Qualifications
Education: BA/BS, or equivalent, in Biology, Chemistry, Histology or related field. Three (3) years of experience in a laboratory environment required. Master's Degree, with related graduate research, may substitute for experience to the extent permitted by the JHU equivalency formula.

Preferred Qualifications
(ASCP) certification preferred but not required.

The referenced base salary range represents the low and high end of Johns Hopkins Universitys salary range for this position. Not all candidates will be eligible for the upper end of the salary range. Exact salary will ultimately depend on multiple factors, which may include the successful candidate's geographic location, skills, work experience, market conditions, education/training and other qualifications. Education and Experience Equivalency
Please refer to the job description above to see which forms of equivalency are permitted for this position. If permitted, equivalencies will follow these guidelines: JHU Equivalency Formula: 30 undergraduate degree credits (semester hours) or 18 graduate degree credits may substitute for one year of experience. Additional related experience may substitute for required education on the same basis. For jobs where equivalency is permitted, up to two years of non-related college course work may be applied towards the total minimum education/experience required for the respective job.
