We are looking for a highly skilled Manufacturing Engineering manager, with a strong background in mechanical systems & mechanisms, to oversee the Manufacturing Engineering team at our manufacturing facility in Huntsville, Alabama. The Manufacturing Engineering team at this location is focused on development, manufacturing, test, and delivery of various mechanical systems that will be used on the MK2 Lunar Lander flight vehicle. This role will directly impact sustained human presence in space and on the Moon, and passion for our mission and vision is required

Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

You will share in the team’s impact with the day-to-day responsibilities including Manufacturing Plan development, Work Order authoring, developing innovative processes and procedures for various spaceflight systems, and provide mentoring and career path development for your direct reports. Directly lead a team of manufacturing engineers with translating engineering design, drawings, and configurations into fully functional hardware ready for test, qualification, and flight. Evaluate staffing requirements and hire strong candidates to build a team consistent with our leadership principles. Coordinate daily execution of scheduled and unscheduled manufacturing engineering tasks to ensure operational performance expectations (daily completion goals, production rates, etc.) are met.  Ensure compliance with Blue Origin’s documented Policies and procedures, as well as industry specifications. Assist with authoring various manufacturing engineering documentation (work orders, policies, procedures, manuals, etc.). Interface and communicate with various stakeholders across other departments and business units to ensure mission objective success. Champion and promote a culture of safety and quality first. Actively participate in your team’s annual and mid-Year reviews, as well as salary planning efforts. Work with multi-functional teams that are responsible for selecting materials, manufacturing processes, and suppliers to produce world class aerospace hardware. Apply robust, consistent, and reliable engineering fundamentals and processes to ensure the highest quality of manufacturing engineering. Review and understand companywide processes and command media to ensure proper compliance. Drive research and development hardware into a repeatable production product. Identify, develop, and deploy new manufacturing methods (or refine existing processes) to improve quality, reduce cost, and optimize build schedule. Closely manage cost, quality, build sequence, and schedule of hardware throughout the entire fabrication process. Perform engineering drawing review and drive manufacturability into designs. Develop process control measures and evaluation through statistical analysis. Define and support repair and rework activities. Design, procure, install, and integrate custom manufacturing equipment. Perform root cause analyses when non-conformances and escapes are identified and deploy corrective actions. Ensure proper material handling and packaging to protect hardware throughout the fabrication and test process. Manage hardware configuration and maintain pedigree throughout the entire build and test process. Ensures the consistent application and proper communication with production operations of requirements to support fabrication needs, including schedule, capacity planning, equipment, facilities, and infrastructure. Perform and lead others in the development of specific project plans, managing risks, tracking, reporting on status, and resolving blocking issues. Work independently toward long-range objectives without appreciable direction and resolve technical objectives of assignments to develop approaches to solutions.

Qualifications:

Bachelor’s degree in engineering. Experience with launch vehicle, spacecraft, satellite, and/or aircraft manufacturing environments. Ability to work effectively in a fast-paced, dynamic team environment supporting constantly evolving design iterations. Prior people leadership experience managing within fast-paced and evolving environments. 7+ years of related combined experience in manufacturing engineering, people leadership, and project management/program management roles at various stages within the product lifecycle. Experience with mentoring engineers in the areas of career development, technical skills, and project management. Previous experience in a product leadership role with significant technical project management responsibility and proven technical depth. Experience leading product and people through various product lifecycle stages including concept, development, and production. Proficiency with Computer-Aided Design (CAD). Proficiency with Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing (GD&T). Ability to interpret engineering models, drawings, specifications, written work instructions, and test procedures. Strong background with mechanical systems/mechanisms and hands-on fabrication experience. Demonstrated ability in component fabrication, precision assembly, and testing using a variety of methods, techniques, and materials. Extreme customer-focus with strong verbal and written communication skills. Proficient with the use of Microsoft Office suite of software (Outlook, Word, Excel, & PowerPoint). Ability to support scheduled work shift (we rotate shifts occasionally) and work off-shift (2nd or 3rd shifts), extended hours, and weekends if/when vital. Ability to earn trust, maintain positive and professional relationships, and contribute to a culture of inclusion. A demonstrated ability to work cooperatively with teams of diverse skills across large geographic distances. Must be a U.S. citizen or national, U.S. permanent resident (current Green Card holder), or lawfully admitted into the U.S. as a refugee or granted asylum.

Desired:

Master’s degree in engineering. Advanced professional expertise in manufacturing engineering fundamentals across the product lifecycle including requirements, fabrication, assembly, verification, test, and refurbishment. Lean Six Sigma Green Belt Certification. Experience using schedule management tools (P6 Primavera and/or Microsoft Project) to analyze/manage schedule health, variances, and Critical Path. Experience using cost management tools to analyze/manage project budget health and variances.
