About the Position: WHOI has received a grantto support this position, which will report directly to WHOI’sDeputy Director and Vice President for Science and Engineering. Theprimary role of the Director of Imaging Technology is to build onWHOI’s existing capabilities and develop new opportunities forleadership in advanced underwater imaging. While WHOI researcherspresently develop and deploy a wide variety of innovative imagingtechnology, their imaging expertise is dispersed across departmentsthroughout the Institution. The Director of Imaging Technology willbring together, support, and coordinate among these hubs of imagingexpertise—and individual scientists, researchers, and technicalstaff - to drive collaboration, increase efficiencies, acceleratetechnological innovation, and advance WHOI science, discovery, andocean exploration. WHOI is committed toensuring that the institution is at the forefront of underseaimaging technology and the long-term success of the individual whooccupies this important leadership role. This position is expectedto collaborate and develop new avenues of sponsored development byworking with WHOI researchers to provide imaging technologysolutions for grant-funded research, and/or for outside clientsincluding government agencies, peer institutions, and private-sectorocean exploration and media companies. In addition to workingclosely with WHOI’s scientific, engineering, and technical staff, theDirector of Imaging Technology will be responsive to the imagingneeds of WHOI Advancement (Communications and DevelopmentDepartments), collecting, curating, and providing high-qualityvisual assets (video and still imagery) to support Institutionaloutreach and communications efforts. The new Director ofImaging Technology is a dynamic leader with a positive, collegialmindset who can build teams, drawing on internal and externalexpertise. This person should possess excellent interpersonalcommunication skills and high emotional intelligence, as well asbroad expertise in diverse imaging technologies, data science, datamanagement, and archiving. The broad goals andresponsibilities for the Director are as follows: Goals: Develop, implement, and update a strategic plan and researchagenda for the Imaging Technology Program. Leverage understanding of current and future state-of-the-art,emerging, and innovative imaging technologies and theirpotential application to oceanography. Cultivate strong, positive working relationships with WHOIleadership, scientists, engineers, technical staff, anddevelopment and communications professionals across theInstitution. Work collaboratively with WHOI Advancement (Communications andDevelopment) to provide high quality imagery (video, stills) forearned media, donor cultivation, and public-facing content andevents. Collaborate with WHOI Communications to provide data managementand archiving solutions that enable timely access WHOI imageassets for public/donor engagement. Develop new revenue streams by working with WHOI researchers toprovide imaging technology solutions for grant-funded research,and/or for outside clients including government agencies, peerinstitutions, and private-sector ocean exploration and mediacompanies. Through research endeavors and the preparation of researchresults and reports, patentable inventions, important researchtechniques, and/or engineering designs significantly impact theways various aspects of ocean science are studied. Responsibilities: Advance WHOI’s mission and vision, as described in Vision2030. Work collaboratively with WHOI scientists, engineers, andtechnical staff to create, develop, design, construct, andadvance imaging solutions for use in the field and laboratory. Apply and maintain broad knowledge of a variety of technologiesapplicable to imaging such as software, hardware, artificialintelligence, machine learning, cameras, lighting, among others. Provide engineering and system integration capabilities toscientists, engineers, and operations that drive successful newimaging solutions. Professional Qualifications and Personal Attributes: The Director shouldideally possess the following professional qualifications andpersonal attributes: Professional Qualifications: Minimum of abachelor’s degree in engineering; a master’s degree or Ph.D.preferred. Demonstrated leadership and experience with Image Sensors andImage Signal Processing. Ability to demonstrate a strongportfolio of domain specific experience and independent research& proposal success. Demonstrated ability to develop innovative architecture andalgorithm designs. Record of leadership in scientific and/or engineering research. Experience in managing an academic R&D organization. Ability toinspire and organize independent scientists and engineers. Proven track record in developing partnerships with industry and government. Personal Attributes: Passionate commitment to the values and mission of WHOI. Ability to lead, inspire, and work with others in acollaborative and collegial manner reflecting high emotionalintelligence.
