Job Type Full-timeDescriptionSUMMARY:Responsible for providing aid to ophthalmologists by obtaining medical records, performing preliminary eye function testing and explaining to patients about medication or procedures. Work closely with an ophthalmologist, gathering patient information necessary to complete a diagnosis. Assistants often see the patient before the ophthalmologist, and are often responsible for preparing the patient for the exam and beginning the examination with standard tests and measurements.POSITION REQUIREMENTS:Gathering medical records and patient informationTaking ocular measurements, both anatomical and functionalAdministering or preparing medicationsProviding eye care and contact lens information to the patientMaintaining and cleaning ophthalmic instrumentsAssisting the ophthalmologist in basic proceduresOther duties as assignedReview patient charts prior to exam to anticipate procedures and supplies or equipment that may be neededCorrectly document exam findings in patient charts dictated by the doctorEnsure fee slips are marked correctly with proper modifiers and correctly code patient visits in EyeMD for insuranceAble to perform when needed diagnostic testingPerform a variety of clinical skills (IOP check, install drops into patients eyes if needed)Instruct patients both verbally and written instructions regarding any medications and treatmentsAble to answer patient questions and follow up phone calls when neededAble to take Triage Calls and send over medication refillsAssist doctor with minor surgical proceduresClean and sterilize equipmentMaintain patient confidentialityRequirementsPREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:One year experience in an ophthalmology settingHigh school diploma (or GED)Certification by Joint Commission on Allied Health Personnel in Ophthalmology (JCAHPO)Knowledge of ocular diseases and systemic diseases affecting the eyeKnowledge of ultrasound and visual field machinesProblem solver, analytical skillsPersonable and empathetic with patient's needs and concernsWell-organized with attention to detail.PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS:Team PlayerCommunications skillsExcellent computer skillsMaintains ConfidentialityCritical Thinking
