Description

SUMMARY:

Responsible for providing aid to ophthalmologists by obtaining medical records, performing preliminary eye function testing and explaining to patients about medication or procedures. Work closely with an ophthalmologist, gathering patient information necessary to complete a diagnosis. Assistants often see the patient before the ophthalmologist, and are often responsible for preparing the patient for the exam and beginning the examination with standard tests and measurements.

POSITION REQUIREMENTS:
  1. Gathering medical records and patient information
  2. Taking ocular measurements, both anatomical and functional
  3. Administering or preparing medications
  4. Providing eye care and contact lens information to the patient
  5. Maintaining and cleaning ophthalmic instruments
  6. Assisting the ophthalmologist in basic procedures
  7. Other duties as assigned
  8. Review patient charts prior to exam to anticipate procedures and supplies or equipment that may be needed
  9. Correctly document exam findings in patient charts dictated by the doctor
  10. Ensure fee slips are marked correctly with proper modifiers and correctly code patient visits in EyeMD for insurance
  11. Able to perform when needed diagnostic testing
  12. Perform a variety of clinical skills (IOP check, install drops into patients eyes if needed)
  13. Instruct patients both verbally and written instructions regarding any medications and treatments
  14. Able to answer patient questions and follow up phone calls when needed
  15. Able to take Triage Calls and send over medication refills
  16. Assist doctor with minor surgical procedures
  17. Clean and sterilize equipment
  18. Maintain patient confidentiality


Requirements

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
  1. One year experience in an ophthalmology setting
  2. High school diploma (or GED)
  3. Certification by Joint Commission on Allied Health Personnel in Ophthalmology (JCAHPO)
  4. Knowledge of ocular diseases and systemic diseases affecting the eye
  5. Knowledge of ultrasound and visual field machines
  6. Problem solver, analytical skills
  7. Personable and empathetic with patient's needs and concerns
  8. Well-organized with attention to detail.
