Join our team in the Kitty Andersen Youth Science Center (KAYSC) as a High School Track Coordinator. The purpose of this role is to provide support for managers around STEM Justice youth programming. They will support curriculum and assessment work, community outreach and career development for youth workers at the KAYSC under the direction of the appropriate manager. The High School Program Coordinator helps facilitate the successful delivery of youth development programming within the KAYSC High School program, including working with families, other museum departments and internal or external vendors and/or partners.

Work Environment & Schedule: Will be working primarily in the KAYSC space at the Science Museum of Minnesota with occasional field trips and external meetings. Computer usage, active body movement and sitting for extended periods of time are required. Work schedule involves evenings, weekends and occasional staff meetings during weekdays. Must be able to transport self for work activities.

Job Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Work to coordinate track-specific curriculum, community outreach and career development activities. These activities may include preparing meeting and activity schedules, confirming guest speakers/presenters and making field trip arrangements.
  • Document attendance, program activities, STEM Justice curriculum, and prepare various reports. Assist with record keeping, evaluation of program and other documentation as needed.
  • Cultivate individual relationships with youth through leading each youth through a Science Capital Development process focused on: Science Capital documentation: What you know (STEM skills/knowledge), Who you know (Awareness, Network), How you think (Attitude), What you do (Actions).
  • Track and support youth progress on STEM skills/knowledge classes
  • Support Crew and KAYSC-wide STEM justice projects.
  • Coordinate local College/Trade School tours & Info Sessions
  • Provide scholarship search and college application assistance
  • Implement and maintain equipment checkout system
  • Prepare meeting and activity schedules, confirming guest speakers/presenters and making field trip arrangements.
  • Document attendance, program activities (written and visual),assist with record keeping, and evaluation of the program and other documentation as needed.
  • Help to manage crew outreach, communications, and branding under the direction of the program manager. Manage team web-presence and social media to ensure effective internal and external communications.
  • Coordinate and maintain relationships with community partners by attending meetings and keeping communication. Help to maintain KAYSC community partner databases with updated partner information & coordinate communication about crew events and activities to partners as necessary.
  • Develop authentic relationships with both youth and their families that include clear and consistent communication regarding both the youth and parent/guardian's experience and expectation.
  • Incorporate a strong knowledge of the KAYSC mission, target populations, and youth development best practices to role model effective behaviors and values for youth participants.
  • Attend and seek out Science Technology Engineering and Math (STEM) & youth development trainings that support the work of the high school program and share out learning to KAYSC youth/staff.
  • Demonstrate organization in all areas of work, including communication, assigned tasks and deadlines as directed by the KAYSC High School Program Manager.
  • Represent KAYSC/SMM at external and internal meetings.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications:
  • High School Diploma or equivalent required.
  • Proven experience working with a range of diverse communities.
  • Demonstrated youth development experience, community outreach/engagement work, experience as a mentor, staff or family member supporting positive youth development.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Some secondary education.
  • Experience with STEM related career development activities.
  • Cultural competency and experience working with diverse communities.
  • Willingness to be open and respectful of all backgrounds.
  • Fluency in language(s) other than English valued (Hmong, Somali, Spanish).


Starting Pay Rate: $17.50 per hour (Depending on Qualifications)
