Overview:

Responsible for the general books of the Bookstore. Cover the register when student employees are not working. Assist other areas of the store as needed. Accounts payable and month-end billing.

The schedule for this position is 8:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. during the academic year and 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. during the summer months. This position is benefits eligible.

Responsibilities:
  1. Provide excellent customer service in person and by phone.
  2. Maintain inventories for all general book sections of the store. Responsible for ordering, receiving, and shipping all general books.
  3. Manage special book events on campus for departments.
  4. Receive, price, and shelve merchandise when it arrives.
  5. Key person to operate the cash register. Monitor student workers.
  6. Act as accounts payable for all Bookstore invoices.
  7. Assist with all shipping and receiving procedures.
  8. Month-end reporting of interdepartmental billings.
  9. Create store signs for displays and advertising. Maintain information campus-wide for hours and special promotions.
  10. Flexibility to work occasional Saturdays during the school year, when students are on campus.
  11. Open and close the Bookstore as needed.
  12. Work with others in planning and carrying out promotions for the store.
  13. Be familiar with Hillsdale College, the campus, and its departments.
  14. Perform additional duties as assigned by the Bookstore
  15. Assist in after-hours activities as needed.

Qualifications

Education and Experience

This position requires a high school diploma. Some college experience or equivalent combination of education and experience. Two years of retail and/or accounting would be desirable. Customer service and cash handling experience are also preferred.

  1. Possess good customer relations skills in dealing with customers and staff on the phone and in person.
  2. Ability to work without supervision to complete the job.
  3. Knowledge of Excel, Microsoft Office, Microsoft Word, and Outlook.
  4. Must be detail-oriented.
  5. Maintain an acceptable attendance record, be punctual, and meet deadlines.
  6. Possess good organizational skills.
  7. Ability to work in a fast-paced
  8. Ability to remain calm and personable under pressure.
  9. Knowledge of retail operations.
  10. Ability to handle a wide variety of assignments and prioritize properly.

  12. Maintain confidentiality.

Physical Requirements

Ability to lift or otherwise move heavy and/or awkward objects. Must be able to remain in a stationary position for long periods.
