- The Patient Care Technician (PCT) has primary responsibility to assist the RN with patient care, taking vital signs, transporting patients to/from department and patient safety. The PCT performs support functions for the unit, including basic clerical functions, assists with scheduling, supply ordering and maintenance of a tidy patient care department

- Essential Responsibilities
- Demonstrates compliance with Code of Conduct and compliance policies, and takes action to resolve compliance questions or concerns and report suspected violations.
- Demonstrates knowledge of hospital approved patient identifications procedures.
- Communicates pertinent information and unfinished tasks to RN/co-workers prior to breaks, lunches and end of shift to ensure continuity of patient care and workflow.
- Provides safe patient environment at all times:
- Stays with patient, who may be in danger of falling and hurting themselves
- Correctly identifies patient by use of armband.
- Call bell within reach and secured to gurney
- Transports patients in a safe, efficient and comfortable manner to and from Department / Floors when necessary, reporting any changes that may occur during transport. (SBAR)
- Assists in cleaning dialysis stations and machines in accordance with hospital policies.
- Assists Nursing staff with patient care, such as repositioning and cleaning of incontinent patients and with moving patients, when necessary.
- Responds and assists to Code Blue.
- Notifies patients RN prior to transport and upon return.
- Notifies Nurse if patient needs taken off or put on monitor.
- Operates patient support equipment, such as: oxygen tanks, Hovermats, and ergo-slide.
- Maintains and sanitizes gurneys.
- Assists in transporting specimens to the lab department as needed.
- Demonstrates good body mechanics moving, lifting and transporting patients.
- Appropriately positions and ambulates patients per care plan.
- Communicates observations of patient condition changes to RN.
- Maintains general tidiness of patient care area and unit.
- Performs clerical duties, as directed, in the department (filing, answering phones, scheduling of patients basic order entry, data entry and retrieval, and patient charges).
- Performs other duties as assigned.
