Job Duties of Communications Specialist II

The Communications Specialist II is often the unsung professional of the emergency response team. These professionals, who gather essential information from Communications Specialist I, and dispatch the appropriate units, must be able to take control of situations that may chaotic, stressful, and confusing.

They must be organized, adept at multi-tasking, level-headed, and trustworthy. Their work within emergency response services often places them in the middle of life or death situations, so requirements and training for these positions are often stringent, rigorous and unwavering.

Salary Details

The salary range for this position ranges from $16.50 to $25.50 per hour. Starting compensation for the role will depend on a number of factors, including a candidate's qualifications, skills, competencies and experience and may change from the amount shown.   • Responsible for in-coming emergency and non-emergency calls via phone, radio, and other established means of communication
  • Receives emergency calls from the public and prioritizes and processes them into a pre-established computer format for a concise event at a precise location
  • Relays information and contacts appropriate agencies or personnel to resolve routine problems
  • Executes accurate and expedient communications work in response to a high volume of emergency and non-emergency calls
  • Receives emergency and non-emergency service telephone calls from primary PSAP (Public Safety Answering Point) for EMS
  • Utilize Computer Aided Dispatch program to enter and manage resources
  • Operates dispatch monitoring and activity equipment
  • Responsible for knowledge and use of equipment, including but not limited to the computer, printers, recording devices, telephones, and other equipment as assigned by superiors.
  • Utilization of online programs for requests for transportation
  • Process routine requests for medical transportation with a customer centric mentality
  • Operating in the department command post during EOC (Emergency Operations Center) activations.
  • Coaching and mentoring of Communications Specialist I
  • Participate in QC/CQI of all related events.

Minimum Requirements for Employment

For most dispatcher positions, candidates must be at least 21 years old, and they must possess a high school diploma or GED.

Candidates for these positions must also expect to undergo a criminal background check that meets all local, state and federal requirements, drug screen. Successfully passing pre-employment testing through Criticall is required. This type of pre-employment testing is usually completed before a job offer is extended.

Another minimum requirement for employment for a Communications Specialist II includes the completion of a comprehensive training program during the first year of employment. This often includes classroom training and extensive, on-the-job training. Previous experience as or equivalent to, a Communications Specialist I or II. experience may apply and shorten the training period. First Aid and CPR certification are required in the first 90 days.

EMT-B, EMT-A/I, Paramedics, EMD/EPD/EFD, PCT are all Preferred but not required certifications/training.
