Program Counselor

The Program Counselor, under the supervision of the Assistant Program Director, is responsible for coordinating, organizing, and leading a variety of engaging activities for campers. This role involves ensuring the safety, well-being, and active participation of campers, fostering a positive and inclusive environment, managing behavior, collaborating with camp staff, and effectively communicating with both colleagues and parents/guardians. The Program Counselor plays a crucial role in implementing camp programs, supporting camper development, and contributing to a successful and enriching camp experience.

Essential Functions

• Activity Planning and Implementation: Collaborating to plan and execute diverse, engaging, and age-appropriate activities for campers.
• Supervision and Safety: Ensuring the safety, well-being, and active involvement of campers during scheduled activities, maintaining a secure environment.
• •Leadership and Engagement: Guiding campers through activities, encouraging participation, and fostering a positive and inclusive atmosphere.
• Behavioral Management: Implementing strategies for managing behavior and conflict resolution among campers while promoting a respectful environment.
• Collaboration and Coordination: Working with camp staff to coordinate schedules, share ideas, and ensure a cohesive camp program.
• Mentoring and Support: Building relationships with campers, offering mentorship, emotional support, and serving as a positive role model.
• Policy Adherence: Ensuring compliance with camp policies, safety protocols, and guidelines, reinforcing these standards with campers.
• Communication and Reporting: Effectively communicating with camp leadership, fellow counselors, and parents/guardians regarding camper progress and concerns.
• •Emergency Response: Being prepared to respond to emergencies, including administering first aid and following camp protocols for camper safety.
• Documentation and Evaluation: Maintaining accurate records, documenting daily activities, and contributing feedback for program evaluation and improvement.

Additional Functions:

•Program counselors wear many hats and often adapt to various roles based on the needs of the camp, their own strengths, and the interests of the campers. These additional functions contribute significantly to the holistic development and memorable experiences of campers during their time at camp.

Requirements

• Must pass YMCA background check
• Possess (or obtain during training) a current CPR/AED & First Aid Certification
• Must be 18 years of age or Older

Preferred Qualifications

• Experience working with youth
• Graduate of Counselor in Training Program
• Possess (or obtain during training) a current certification/qualified experience in Challenge Course Facilitation, Lifeguard, or Horsemanship
