Summary This position is located at Bureau of Engraving and Printing, within the Facilities Support Services Division. As a Painter, you will use brushes, rollers and/or spray paints to provide a decorative as well as protective finish. Characteristics of this work, is the mixing and blending of paints, stains and other surface coating material to match desired colors. Work is subject to inspection by the supervisor for compliance with instructions and accepted trade practices. Responsibilities As a Painter, you will: Paint, decorate, and refinish interior and exterior surfaces of buildings, furniture and fixtures, presses, machinery or other structures and equipment as may require a protective and/or decorative coating. Evaluate condition of the surface to be covered and select a surface preparation technique consistent with the type and condition of surface, the coating material to be applied, and the exposure and expected condition of use. Perform lead paint abatement that requires a state certification, which requires working independently or in pairs with little or no supervision. Perform dry wall taping and finishing and perform other related duties that are characteristic of the painting trade. Receive both oral and written instructions with the complexity of the job dictating the specificity of instructions. Requirements Conditions of Employment This position requires a 4-year apprenticeship in painting OR 4 years of practical experience working under journeyman painters. Training must be sufficient in content of trade skills to be equivalent of a completed apprenticeship. Applicants must provide proof of completion of a 4-year apprenticeship or have 4 years of documented experience working under journeyman painters. Applicants qualifying with 4 years of experience must provide references at time of interview to verify journeyman status. Current state certification to perform lead paint abatement. Physical Requirements: The job requires extensive walking, standing, crawling, bending, kneeling, climbing, and lifting. Incumbent must be able to work from scaffolds, ladders, and hanging scaffolds in cramped positions and in small spaces.
