Position Description: The Communications Director’s primary responsibility is membership engagement through the use of various communication outlets (social, email, print media). The position is staff liaison to the Communications and Dental Health Committees and the Journal Advisory Board.

Key Responsibilities/Duties:

  • Serving as editor of GHDS communications (e.g., The GHDS Journal-quarterly publication, blast email messages, social media posts, advertising)
  • Writing, editing, and proofreading are essential to this position with the ability to determine appropriate delivery of communications
  • Design elements for GHDS events, initiatives, membership engagement, opportunities, and Star of the South
Reporting on the effectiveness of communication and marketing strategies utilizing analytics and other toolsOverseeing the communications budget; securing advertisers, classified ad salesEnsuring GHDS website is current, reflects GHDS image and effective in carrying out desired outcomes Incorporating video elements to enrich, amplify, or occasionally substitute written or printed communications, as appropriate for specific applications and desired audience engagementOverseeing GHDS’ branding, including effective collaboration with other members of the GHDS team and allied dental organizationsLeading new communication initiative opportunitiesServing as a staff liaison to Communications and Dental Health committeesOther job-related duties as assigned
  • Minimum two years’ work experience in the areas of journalism, communications, public relations, and/or marketing, preferably with an association or nonprofit organization
  • Demonstrable experience in:
  • communications, marketing and/or public relations
  • planning/project management, adhering to timelines and budgets, to achieve desired outcomes
  • developing and executing a comprehensive communications and marketing plan in alignment with a larger organization-wide strategic plan
Proficient in Microsoft Office applications, graphic design, website development and maintenance, virtual collaboration tools, and social media

Skills & Abilities:

  • Excellent written and oral communication skills
  • Highly organized with exceptional attention to detail and accuracy
  • Ability to lead and transform GHDS Communications, while collaborating with GHDS staff and leadership
  • Experience using membership data management and customer relationship software is a plus
  • Reliable, dependable, with ability to work efficiently with a high level of autonomy
  • Comfortable understanding budgets and working with the executive director managing revenue and expenses for communications and marketing activities
  • Customer service-oriented skills
  • Attendance at various GHDS events (primarily local)
