Responsibilities
The Lactation Consultant is responsible for coordinating patient care and educational activities related to lactation for staff and breastfeeding mothers in inpatient or outpatient settings. The individual is a professional caregiver who uses the nursing process to provide overall coordination, planning, and management of lactation services to staff/physicians.
Qualifications
Required Qualifications
- 2 years of lactation education experience preferred
- Basic Life Support (BLS)
- International Board-Certified Lactation Consultant certification (IBCLC)
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Ability to determine the educational needs of a client and/or family
- Ability to explain the criteria used to evaluation education programs
- Ability to use new technology and teaching methodologies
- Demonstrate the knowledge and ability to use principles of adult education
- Demonstrate the ability to provide age-specific care that supports psychosocial functioning and facilitates lifestyle changes
- Demonstrate the ability to help patients understand the breastfeeding process
