Responsibilities:
Under the direction of the Program Coordinator, serves as a medical interpreter for patients and staff. Relays medical and other information between individuals who communicate in different languages, including different spoken languages and sign language, in compliance with hospital policies and procedures, and patient confidentiality regulations and guidelines. May provide trilingual interpretation services using Spanish or Portuguese and ASL.

Qualifications:
Bachelor’s Degree in a science, language, or human services area is required. Fluency in English and American Sign Language (ASL) required. Fluency in sign language must be demonstrated by certification offered by at least one of the following: The National Registry of Interpreters of the Deaf (RID); the National Association of the Deaf (NAD) at or above level 4; or eligible to sit for exam. Additional fluency in Spanish or Portuguese is strongly preferred. Specific training or experience in medical interpretation required. The Medical Interpreter must be “qualified” and possess the minimum certification of 40 hours of interpreter training. Candidate certified through the National Board of Certification for Medical Interpreters required or must obtain the Certification within twelve (12) months of hire. An understanding of diverse cultural/socio-economic backgrounds, along with excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to work well under pressure required. Additional related experience, education or training may be substituted for the degree.
