Summary:
This position performs General diagnostic ultrasound testing such as Abdominal, OB/GYN, and small parts examinations as well as peripheral and abdominal vascular exams. An Ultrasound Technologist is a Diagnostic Ultrasound Professional that is qualified by professional credentialing, academic, and clinical experience to provide diagnostic patient care services using ultrasound and related diagnostic procedures. The scope of practice of the Ultrasound Technologist includes those procedures, acts and processes permitted by law, for which the individual has received education and clinical experience, has demonstrated competency, and has completed the appropriate American Registry of Diagnostic Medical Sonography (ARDMS) or Cardiovascular Credentialing International (CCI) specialty certification(s) which is the standard of practice in ultrasound. The Ultrasound Technologist is responsible for the independent operation of sonographic equipment, and for performing and communicating findings of diagnostic examinations using sonography as appropriate. The Ultrasound Technologist is responsible for daily operations of the ultrasound lab, patient schedule, equipment maintenance, the report of equipment failures, and quality assessment (QA). The sonographer maintains a high standard of medical ethics at all times and is self-motivated to pursue lifelong learning to increase level of understanding and knowledge of the field, disease, and new procedures as they evolve.

Responsibilities:
(50%)* Performs clinical assessment and diagnostic sonography examinations according to defined imaging protocols. Uses cognitive sonographic skills to identify, record, and adapt procedures as appropriate to anatomical, pathological, diagnostic information and images. Uses independent judgment during the sonographic exam to accurately differentiate between normal and pathologic findings. Analyze sonograms, synthesizes sonographic information and medical history, and communicates findings to the appropriate physician. Prepares equipment for ordered exam; transports patients as needed; explains procedure to patient; performs exam; records exam; consults with radiologist as needed.

 

(20%)* Provides excellent customer service. Demonstrates professionalism and courtesy at all times toward all employees, physicians, associated staff and MyMichigan Health customers and potential customers. Cooperates with other personnel to achieve departmental and hospital goals; attends/participates in departmental and hospital meetings.

 

(30%)* Assumes responsibility for the safety, mental and physical comfort of patients while they are in the ultrasound technologist�s care.

 

(10%)* Supervises and trains student sonographers. Monitors and reports progress of students to program coordinator, department manager, and student.

 

OTHER DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Maintains ultrasound equipment and work area and adequate supplies.

 

Provides excellent customer service.

 

Demonstrates professionalism and courtesy at all times toward all employees, physicians, associated staff and MyMichigan Health customers and potential customers.

 

Cooperates with other personnel to achieve departmental and hospital goals; attends/participates in departmental and hospital meetings.

 

Performs other work-related duties as assigned including assisting in other areas of the department as needed.

 

Provides department specific on call related duties days, evenings, and weekends as assigned.

Certifications and Licensures:
ARDMS AB: Abdominal Ultrasound Tech

Equivalent Experience: Ultrasound technologist performing general ultrasound imaging, including abdomen, small parts, and obstetrics/gynecology, must obtain and maintain active certifications by the ARDMS in abdomen and OB/GYN specialties within one year of hire.

 

 

Fingerprinting

 

ULTRA C I: ARDMS-RVT OR CCI-RVS

Equivalent Experience: Ultrasound technologists performing vascular imaging such as arterial/venous exams must obtain and maintain active certifications by ARDMS in RVT or CCI-RVS specialties.Effective 10/29/23, new hires will have 1 year from date of hire to receive the certification. Effective 10/29/23, current employees will have 18 months to receive the certification.Current compliance with Continuing Medical Education (CME) requirements for specialty(ies) as appropriate and ARDMS or CCI re credentialing yearly requirements to maintain active registrant status.

 

 

Required Education:
Associate's Degree required

PHYSICAL/MENTAL REQUIREMENTS AND TYPICAL WORKING CONDITIONS:

 

Exposure to stressful situations, including those involving public contact, as well as, trauma, grief and death.

 

Able to wear personal protective equipment that includes latex materials or appropriate substitute if required for your position.

 

Is able to move freely about facility with or without an assisted device and must be able to perform the functions of the job as outlined in the job description.

 

Overall vision and hearing is necessary with or without assisted device(s).

 

Frequently required to sit/stand/walk for long periods of time. May require frequent postural changes such as stooping, kneeling or crouching.

 

Some exposure to blood borne pathogens and other potentially infectious material. Must follow MyMichigan Health bloodborne pathogen and TB testing as required.

 

Ability to handle multiple tasks, get along with others, work independently, regular and predictable attendance and ability to stay awake.

 

Overall dexterity is required including handling, reaching, grasping, fingering and feeling. May require repetition of these movements on a regular to frequent basis.

 

Physical Demand Level: Light. Must be able to occasionally (0-33% of the workday) lift or carry 11-20 lbs., frequently (34-66% of the workday) 10 lbs. and or Walk/Stand/Push/Pull of Arm/Leg controls.
