Responsibilities:
Responsible for providing quality patient care while maintaining the imaging equipment for all procedures performed in the laboratory. Responsible for ensuring images are created as part of the patient permanent record. This document defines major job responsibilities and performance expectations and serves as a tool for evaluation performance. However, it is not intended to be all inclusive as other duties may be assigned as necessary

• Responsible for ensuring top quality diagnostic images with minimal Patient, Physician, and Staff radiation exposure.
• Turns in monthly dosimetry badges so readings can be reported, checked and posted monthly by the Radiation Safety Officer.
• Responsible for radiation safety teaching to include the Cardiovascular Laboratory
Staff and Physicians in basic radiation protection and to work with the Radiation Physicist and the State Bureau of Radiation Health in testing radiation equipment as demonstrated by attendance records and State Inspection reports.
• Assists in fluoroscoping all lead aprons and thyroid shields annually to ensure their integrity.
Provides top quality diagnostic images for physician review.

• Prepares the patient for pre and post catheterization and electrophysiology procedures.
o Exercises pre-procedure teaching to both the patient and the patient’s family prior to and during the procedure as demonstrated by a well-informed patient and family.
o Obtains vital signs, assesses heart rhythm, pedal/brachial pulses, attaches the patient to the E.K.G. monitor and levels transducer with accurate documentation on the Patient Chart.
o Shaves and prepare the appropriate entry site according to departmental procedures as demonstrated by a smooth work-flow and lack of physician complaint.
o Applies dressing to puncture site, ensuring that no bleeding or hematoma occurs during the healing process and instructs the patient on post procedural care as demonstrated by a lack of documented bleeding incidents.
o Acts as a “team” member and helps to expedite procedures by assisting wherever needed as demonstrated by a lack of physician or peer complaints.

• Demonstrates knowledge of all Cardiovascular/Electrophysiology laboratory procedures.
o Utilizes sterile technique in the preparation and maintenance of delicate instrumentation necessary for all catheterization procedures as demonstrated by a lack of reported infections and smooth work flow in the room.
o Scrubs and assists Cardiologist in the performance of procedures as requested as evidenced by lack of complaint by the Cardiologists.
o Has a complete understanding of normal and abnormal anatomy and physiology of the cardiovascular system in order to provide the required assistance to the Cardiologist as demonstrated by a lack of physician complaint and the ability to anticipate the needs of the Physician.
o Assists in preparing the room for cases as demonstrated by a smooth work flow and lack of complaints.

• Maintains accurate, thorough and legible documentation of the information obtained during the
procedure.
o Ensures that consents for procedure are properly filled out and signed as demonstrated by the document.
o Completes protocol sheet during the procedure nothing each step taken and the time as demonstrated by the document.
o Documents patient case information in the documentation system and ensures items are listed for proper charge as demonstrated by turning in the charge sheet on each procedure.

• Demonstrates knowledge of and ability to operate all Cardiovascular/Electrophysiology laboratory equipment.
o Operates Physiologic monitoring system with the ability to balance and calibrate each channel according to any relevant procedures performed in the laboratory as demonstrated by the smooth work flow and lack of physician or peer complaint.
o Assists in Code 300s and resuscitation of the patient as needed as demonstrated in code situations and by lack of physician or peer complaint.

• Contributes to the overall efficiency and cost effectiveness of the Cardiovascular Laboratory.
o Maintains professional behavior during procedures by avoiding conversations with coworkers or
receiving or making personal telephone calls as demonstrated by a lock of physician or peer complaints.
o Cleans the catheterization area and table between cases as demonstrated by a lack of physician or peer complaints.
o Replenishes supplies in each laboratory as needed as demonstrated by appropriate supply levels in each room.
o Transports patients to and from the cardiovascular laboratory as demonstrated by a smooth work flow and lack of physician or peer complaint.
o Responsible for participation in the mandatory call schedule and for completion of scheduled cases prior to the end of the work day as required by the Cardiovascular/Electrophysiology laboratory Supervisor or his/her designee as demonstrated by a lack of physician or peer complaint and appropriate call coverage.

• Demonstrates the knowledge and skills necessary to provide care appropriate to the age of the patients served.

• Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications:
Education / Accreditation / Licensure (required & preferred):

• Two years in an accredited college for a Radiologic Technologist.

 

Experience (required and preferred):

• Two years’ experience as a general Radiologic Technologist or one year experience as Vascular Tech. Previous Cardiac Cath Lab experience preferred.
• Certification by the Bureau of Rad Health and American Registry of Radiological Technologist, CPR certification.
