POSITION SUMMARY The CWO are responsible and accountable for the overall design, direction and implementation of a wellness program that addresses the current environment of burnout among clinicians, health professionals, and staff. The purpose of the program is to lead WHSCs organizational efforts to reduce the risk of burnout among healthcare providers, develop professional joy for our employees and in turn, improve the quality of outcomes in the areas of teaching, research and patient care. The goal of the program is to facilitate system-wide changes that enable clinicians to effectively practice in a culture that prioritizes and promotes professional fulfillment, and optimizes the function of Emorys health system. The well-being program will address the major drivers that influence the organizations performance in the delivery of the highest quality of teaching, research and care to patients. These include environmental and cultural drivers that affect individual and team performance in providing the highest quality care and value to our community. While there are a variety of successful programs designed to promote well-being that exist in disparate areas across Emory, efforts will be needed to catalog, appropriately scale, measure impact, enhance, and potentially centralize these activities. The following will be among the highest priorities of the individual holding this position: Work collaboratively with leadership to structure a comprehensive strategy for improving the overall health and well-being of our clinicians, health professionals, learners, and staff across the academic, research and clinical enterprises of WHSC. Coordinate and lead Emorys efforts pertaining to physician and staff engagement, professional fulfillment, and guiding the organizations efforts to build a more constructive culture for our health professionals and learners. Develop a vision and strategic operating plan for a WHSC Well-Being Program that builds upon current strengths and addresses opportunities to improve well-being, integrating efforts with other key strategic themes including: building a constructive culture; developing new models of care; achieving operational excellence through EmPower (Emorys Lean-based management operating system), quality, clinical safety and value initiatives; interprofessional education and collaborative practice; and financial performance. Measure, benchmark and assess programs designed to promote professional fulfillment; evaluate system flaws and implement innovative system-wide interventions to address professional burnout. Educate, engage and motivate key stakeholders to improve wellness of all members of the healthcare team, utilizing data to drive decisions and gather consensus. Pursue/advance well-being scholarship where appropriate, and develop deep expertise regarding the drivers of professional fulfillment. Conduct evidence-based quality improvement efforts that support clinician well-being and healthy work environments. Regularly monitor and report outcomes, including measures of engagement, professional fulfillment, health and well-being, return on investment, value of investment, and track such measures change with the introduction of interventions. Serve as effective partner to the WHSC schools, acknowledging the needs and constraints of the academic and research missions, while serving as a passionate advocate of the professional well-being programs and their appropriate integration with research and academic activities. MEASURES OF SUCCESS The CWO must provide forward thinking leadership and vision, support a positive, inter-professional work environment and culture of teamwork, and partner effectively with peers and system shared service leaders to support both local and system improvement in well-being across the WHSC entities. The CWO is expected to work with department leaders, physicians, and clinicians across disciplines and professions to address issues of burnout that impact the quality, efficiency and experience of teaching, research and patient care. While maintaining the highest levels of integrity, he/she builds and drives sustained improvement in professional well-being; builds strategic alliances inside and outside the organization to create opportunities and execute strategies; and facilitates an organizational culture that leads and supports ongoing effective growth and excellence. The CWO networks with internal and external constituencies to promote Emory University and Emory Healthcare, as well as to establish significant professional relationships with metropolitan area, regional and national academic medical centers. And the CWO is a seasoned leader and communicator experienced at influencing positive change within a complex, matrixed academic organization and/or healthcare delivery system.

 

QUALIFICATIONS 7 to 10 years progressive management experience in a comprehensive academic health sciences center and/or complex healthcare system environment. Masters Degree in business administration, healthcare administration, or equivalent academic credentials sufficient to engender respect within the Woodruff Health Sciences Center. Clear understanding of WHSC and Emory Healthcare missions and the important impact on academic medicine. Demonstrated expertise in negotiation, coaching, and interpersonal skills. Excellent organizational, communication, program development, and planning skills. The successful candidate will have had progressive leadership experience in complex academic medical centers and environments. He/she will exhibit a substantive understanding of the important issues surrounding professional burnout in the arena of national academic medical centers and healthcare systems. Although not required, a doctor of medicine degree would be considered favorably.
