Spiritual Cultural Support Liaison

Responsibilities:
The chaplain position holds primary duties in ensuring that PrairieCare patients receive individualized spiritual care based on their specific spiritual/ faith needs and belief traditions. The chaplain ministers to the spiritual, emotional, psychosocial and cultural needs of patients (children, adolescents and adults), family members, and staff in an interdisciplinary and collaborative environment. The chaplain may be asked to participate in spiritual care through individual support, group facilitation or family meetings. Chaplains at PrairieCare assist patients, families and staff in their religious and spiritual pursuits by offering ministry and spiritual guidance to all persons requesting that support. The chaplain will use a non-denominational style of spiritual counseling. The chaplain may perform religious duties related to the faith they were ordained in. In the role of Cultural Liaison the Chaplain bridges the gap between mental health care providers and the patients they serve with the goal to eliminate racial and ethnic disparities in the treatment of mental health.
Responsibilities and Accountabilities:
Engage in respectful, courteous communication with patients, families and staff
Assist patients, families and staff in their religious and spiritual pursuits by offering ministry and spiritual guidance to all persons requesting that support
Provide individual spiritual care by request, as well as group facilitation and family meetings
Represents the profession well and stay within their scope of practice while adhering to standards of performance in all capacities. The chaplain will be held to a very high standard of ethical behavior and professionalism
In the role of Cultural Liaison the Chaplain assists in creating an inclusive and collaborative environment for providers and patients/consumers alike with the goal to eliminate racial and ethnic disparities in the treatment of mental health.
Helps to ease the historical and inherent distrust that many racially, ethnically, and culturally diverse communities have toward mental health organizations
Understand the strengths and needs of the community and understand the mental health care system and be able to navigate the system effectively
Understand the health values, beliefs, and practices within the identified cultural group or community they represent and be able to serve as communicator and liaison between the patients/consumers and the inpatient interdisciplinary team.
Assist in developing educational materials that will help patients/consumers to learn more about the mental health care setting and its functions
Provide guidance on implementing workforce diversity initiatives
May be involved with community outreach and education.
Qualifications:
Master’s degree in divinity, theology or equivalent field required. Four units of clinical pastoral education or enrollment in program with completion date of four units no later than one year of hire, including all course work needed for certification.
Board Certified, or eligible to be board Certified with APC, NACC, AJC or other board within three years of hire.
Ecclesial endorsement is required.
Experience as a chaplain in a mental health hospital, hospital with a certified trauma program, or Critical Incident Stress Management preferred
Familiarity with ethics consultation, and familiarity with multiple faiths and diverse populations and age groups.
Ability to work well within a team environment
Strong communication skills and the capacity to communicate and work effectively across disciplines
Engage in respectful, courteous communication with patients, families and staff at all times
Ability to work effectively in a fast paced and at times a stressful environment while maintaining a calm demeanor
Ablilty to work independently and responsibly within the work environment
Strong interpersonal skills, be culturally sensitive to the needs of diverse patient and staff populations and be compassionate and approachable
