Our mission comes to life each summer at Camp Mendocino, a 2,000-acre summer camp in the redwoods of Northern California where 1,400 youth (and growing) each year experience fun, friendship, skill building, leadership opportunities, a supportive community, and the beautiful energy of the outdoors. The Camp Director ensures that Camp Mendocino is a safe, supportive, high-quality, and transformative experience for every youth and staff member. This position provides strategic leadership for all Camp operations, including program design, staff supervision, risk management, community engagement, budgeting, and long-term planning. The Camp Director directly supervises year-round and seasonal leadership staff, oversees 90+ employees during the summer, and serves as the primary liaison between Camp Mendocino and BGCSF headquarters. This position reports to the President of BGCSF and works closely with various members of the senior management team (fundraising, finance, marketing, human resources, programs, and outcomes and impact). This position is full time (40 hours weekly) and is benefits eligible. Key Responsibilities Staff Leadership and Culture (30%) Act as the primary on-site leader from June through August; live at Camp in June, July, and August, ensuring 24-hour operational readiness. Recruit, hire, train, and supervise seasonal staff, promoting a professional, inclusive, and growth-oriented culture. Provide coaching, performance feedback, and leadership development for the year-round staff team and senior staff in summertime. Model and reinforce BGCSFs values in daily operations. Operational and Fiscal Management (25%) Manage Camps annual operating budget, ensuring fiscal responsibility and alignment with revenue goals. Support the Assistant Camp Director for Facilities in overseeing the facility maintenance through the entire year. Support off-season rentals and special events to achieve revenue and partnership targets. Participate in capital planning and infrastructure improvement projects. Ensure accurate record-keeping, data integrity, and reporting. Program Leadership and Evaluation (25%) With the Assistant Director of Programs, lead vision, planning, and implementation of all Camp Mendocino programs, both summertime and off season uses. Ensure programs promote safety, inclusion, and positive youth outcomes. Ensure accurate record-keeping, data integrity, and reporting. Evaluate program success through data, feedback, and annual debriefs; use findings to improve design and staff training. Oversee ACA accreditation and compliance with all regulatory and grant requirements. Partnerships, Marketing, and Recruitment (20%) Build and maintain strong relationships with BGCSF Clubhouses, community partners, funders, and parents. Oversee camper recruitment, registration, and communication systems. Represent Camp Mendocino at public events and within BGCSFs broader network. Attract and retain strong rental relationships, particularly school groups Skills/Knowledge Required 8+ years of leadership experience in youth development, education, or residential camp management. Experience serving youth from diverse and underserved communities. Proven success assembling, training, supervising large teams (60+ seasonal staff). A proven track record of effective financial management, including both cost management and revenue management. Excellent interpersonal, communication, and conflict-resolution skills. Experience with ACA accreditation, safety protocols, and emergency-response planning. Bachelors degree or significant relative work experience required. Ability to live on-site during the summer season (at least 10 weeks). Current First Aid/CPR certification (or willingness to obtain). Valid drivers license (Class B preferred) and the ability and willingness to drive long distances, including on dirt roads. Experience and significant comfort working in Google Suite; experience with database systems and point-of-sale technology is preferred. Preferred 7+ years of leadership experience at a residential camp, particularly serving youth and families from marginalized communities. Background in trauma-informed practice and positive youth development. Familiarity with facility maintenance, food service, hospitality services. Physical Requirements Must be able to walk over uneven terrain and lift up to 40 lbs. Must be comfortable working outdoors in all weather conditions. Must be available to live on-site at Camp Mendocino from June through August and during rentals. At BGCSF, our decisions are based on other factors and dependant on the circumstances for each position. Depending on the need and requirement of the position, an individual could be hired at or near the entry-level, mid-level or top-of-the-range for their role and compensation.
