Backus Hospital in Norwich, CT. Located on the Connecticut shore, Backus Hospital is strategically located approximately 35 miles from Hartford serving the health care needs of New London County and several surrounding counties. Backus Hospital is a 233-bed medical center established in 1893. As of FY22, there were 1,738 employees and 620 physicians on staff. There were 2,388 inpatient surgeries and 6,563 ambulatory surgeries. It remains the only trauma center in Windham and New London Counties. Neurosurgery services are currently provided by three, full-time Hartford HealthCare neurosurgeons. One well-established neurosurgeon is nearing retirement and succession planning is underway to maintain a robust, fully-autonomous neurosurgery program with 24/7 neurosurgery call coverage at Backus Hospital. The new neurosurgeon will walk into immediate volume with a focus on spine.
