Start a career with us todayPosition OverviewThe general role of the Field Technician II – Fiber Optics is to string and maintain fiber optic cable which includes pulling, tensioning, stranding, and spacing lines. This individual will troubleshoot, maintain, and repair fiber lines. This position requires proficiency with new cable installs, removals, modifications, and repairs in outside plant locations to include telephone poles, underground services, and conduit. The Field Technician II is also responsible for terminating, splicing, documenting, and testing fiber optic cables with an end goal of meeting customer needs and providing maximum operating efficiency. The work performed will be within communications and power spaces. This individual understands each product and supports the improvement of operational efficiency and must be comfortable working in heights and confined spaces for this position.The Field Technician II will report to the Project Manager - Fiber Optics and will work primarily out of their assigned location.What You'll DoSafely Perform work in communications spacesQualify to work safely in energized spacesParticipate in work requiring pole climbing when necessaryOperate basic hand tools (Cordless Drill, Hammer, Wrench, Socket Set)Recognize general safety hazards and electrical-specific hazards such as missing and or degraded parts and hardwarePerform work from an elevated position in the bucket truckAssist when needed to remove old hardware from poles and install new Provide safety spotting and roadway flagging support for the operation to include obtaining Flagger CertificationManage worksite housekeeping duties and equipment inspectionsPerform minor field repairs on equipmentPerform cable stripping, cleaving, terminating, and testingStay up to date with Industry Standard coding for fiber opticsProficiently work with fiber optic equipment such as splicers, OTDR (optical time domain refractometer), traffic identifiers, light-source power-meter, fiber specific hand tools, etc.Utilize proper methods and procedures for terminating, splicing, and testing fiber optic cablesOther DutiesThis job posting is not designed to cover or contain a comprehensive listing of activities, duties, or responsibilities that are required for this position. Duties, responsibilities, and activities may change at any time with or without notice.What You'll Bring2-4 years of relevant Fiber Optics experience preferredAbility to identify independent colors and learn color codesValid Driver's License is requiredExperience with the following equipment: ladders, bucket truck, cable puller, and reel stands preferredSmall equipment experience preferred (i.e. forklift, bobcat, telehandler, skid steer, etc.)Flagger Certification preferredMust be comfortable working at elevated heights and in confined spacesAbility to work effectively under minimal supervisionAbility to inspect, operate, and mobilize a bucket truckAbility to apply technical expertise, evaluate problems and implement best practicesPossess verbal and written communication skills with the ability to maintain professionalismCompute basic math calculations and take measurementsAbility to read and execute network drawings and splicing diagramsFamiliar with Microsoft Software such as Outlook, Word, Excel, Project, and VisioWorking Conditions Walk / use hands to finger, handle or feel objects, tools or controls / reach with hands and arms / climb ladders and stairs / crawl / kneelClimb poles; carry, set-up and extend ladders weighing up to 65 pounds, as well as work with confidence on ladders and utility poles at heights of up to 60 feet in the air to perform tasks in communications spacesWork indoors, outdoors, and underground in various weather conditionsAble to walk long distancesAble to lift up to 65 pounds without assistanceAdditional Eligibility QualificationsThis position requires the completion of a thorough background and pre-employment drug and alcohol screening.
