Start a career with us todayPosition OverviewThe general role of the Field Technician I – Fiber Optics is to string and maintain fiber optic cable which includes pulling, tensioning, stranding, and spacing lines. This individual will troubleshoot, maintain, and repair fiber lines. This position will perform new cable installs, removals, modifications, and repairs in outside plant locations to include telephone poles, underground services, and conduit. The Field Technician I is also responsible for terminating, splicing, documenting, and testing fiber optic cables with an end goal of meeting customer needs and providing maximum operating efficiency. The work performed will be within communications and power spaces.This individual understands each product and supports the improvement of operational efficiency and must be comfortable working at heights and in confined spaces for this position.The Field Technician I will report to the Project Manager - Fiber Optics and will work primarily out of their assigned location.What You'll DoSafely perform work in communications spaces Qualify to work safely in energized spaces Participate in training for pole climbingOperate basic hand tools (Cordless Drill, Hammer, Wrench, Socket Set) Qualify to perform work from an elevated position in the bucket truckAssist when needed to remove old hardware from poles and install newProvide roadway flagging support for the operation to include obtaining Flagger CertificationAssist with worksite housekeeping duties and equipment inspectionsAssist with performing minor field repairs on equipmentAssist with stripping, cleaving, terminating, and testing cableLearn Industry Standard coding for fiber opticsBecome familiar with fiber optic equipment such as splicers, OTDR (optical time domain refractometer), traffic identifiers, light-source power-meter, fiber specific hand tools, etc.Learn proper methods and procedures for terminating, splicing, and testing fiber optic cablesLearn to perform ring cuts on live fiber without affecting existing servicesLearn to read and understand manufacturer manuals and standards for operating, installing, and repairing electronic equipment, product, and componentsLearn to troubleshoot and repair common fiber optic equipment and component issuesInstall demarcation enclosures, switches, and other telecom equipmentRoute premise cable both inside and outside of facilitiesAssist in the completion of documentation to include record-keeping, billing, and inventory, etc.Learn to calibrate fiber optic equipment out in the field according to manufacturer's instructionsOther DutiesThis job posting is not designed to cover or contain a comprehensive listing of activities, duties, or responsibilities that are required for this position. Duties, responsibilities, and activities may change at any time with or without notice.What You'll BringNo prior experience necessaryValid Driver's License is required Experience operating the following equipment: ladders, bucket truck, cable puller, and reel stands preferredExperience operating small equipment preferred (i.e., forklift, bobcat, telehandler, skid steer, etc.) General construction and/or flagging experience preferredAbility to obtain and maintain MSHA CertificationMust be comfortable working at elevated heights and in confined spacesAbility to work efficiently under minimal supervisionAbility to inspect, operate, and mobilize a bucket truck preferredVerbal and written communication skills with the ability to maintain professionalismCompute basic math calculations and take measurementsFamiliar with Microsoft Software such as Outlook, Word, and Excel Working ConditionsWalk / use hands to finger, handle or feel objects, tools or controls / reach with hands and arms / climb ladders and stairs / crawl / kneelClimb poles; carry, set-up and extend ladders weighing up to 65 pounds, as well as work with confidence on ladders and utility poles at heights of up to 60 feet in the air to perform tasks in communications spacesWork indoors, outdoors, and underground in various weather conditionsAble to walk long distancesAble to lift up to 65 pounds without assistanceAdditional Eligibility QualificationsThis position requires the completion of a thorough background and pre-employment drug and alcohol screening.
