Has previous successful coaching experience in assigned sport - preferred Have knowledge of the technical aspects of the sport and, at the same time,must continue to examine new theories and procedures pertinent to the field. The assistant coach must serve as an appropriate role model for student athletes through his/her instructions and actions. REPORTS TOThe head coach and athletic director, who provides overall objectives and final evaluation inconjunction with the high school principalsSUPERVISESSupervises student-athletes as directed by the head coach.JOB GOALTo instruct athletes in the fundamental skills, strategy and physical trainingnecessary for them to realize a degree of individual and team success. At the sametime, the coach must instruct and demonstrate behaviors that lead to sociallyacceptable character development, self discipline, self confidence, and pride ofaccomplishment in the student athletes. To upgrade his/her knowledge and skillsthrough coaching clinics, observations, consultation, etc.GENERAL The success of athletic programs has a strong influence on the community'simage of the entire system. The public exposure is a considerableresponsibility and community/parent pressure for winning performance istaxing, but must not override the objectives of good sportsmanship and goodmental health. The position includes other unusual aspect such as extended time, risk injuryfactor and due process predicaments. It is the express intent of this job description to give sufficient guidance tofunction. In cases not specifically covered, it shall be assumed that a coachshall exercise common sense and good judgment. DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES Has a thorough knowledge of all the athletic policies approved by the Smyth County SchoolBoard and is responsible for their implementation by the entire staff of the sports program. Has knowledge of existing system, state and league regulations; implements same consistently andinterprets them for staff. STAFF RESPONSIBILITIES Works with the head coach in establishing the fundamental philosophy, skills and techniques to be taught by staff. Performs such other duties which may be assigned by the head coach ADMINISTRATIVE DUTIES Assists the head coach in providing transportation and requirements for tournamentand special sport events. Assists in the necessary preparation to hold scheduled sport events or practices and adheres toscheduled facility times. STUDENT RESPONSIBILITIES Serves as a mentor to each athlete to promote the development and demonstration in student athletesthe character traits of trustworthiness, respect, responsibility, fairness, caring, and citizenship. Supports the head coach in evaluating a student athlete's grades and conduct. By his/her presence at all practices games and while traveling, provides assistance, guidance andsafeguards for each participant. Supports the head coach in their training rules and any other unique regulations of the sport Supports the head caoch in the programs and policies concerning injuries, medical attention and emergencies. Supports the head coach in determining discipline, delineates procedures concerning due process when the enforcement ofdiscipline is necessary Completes any other task directed by the head coach regarding their student athletes EQUIPMENT Assist the head coach in any matter connected to equipment Assist the head coach in properly marking and identifying all equipment before issuing or storing. Monitors equipment rooms and coaches' offices, authorizes who may enter, issue or requisitionequipment. Permits the athletes to only be in authorized areas of the building at the appropriate times. Assists in examining the locker rooms before and after practices and games, checking on general cleanliness of thefacility. Responsible for cleanliness and maintenance of specific sport equipment. Assists in securing all doors, lights, windows and locks before leaving building if custodians are not on duty. Instills in each player a respect for equipment and school property, its care and proper use. PUBLIC RELATIONS Assists the head coach in promoting the sport within the school through recruiting athletes who are not in another sportsprogram and promotes the sport outside the school through news media, little league programs, or inany other feasible manner.
