This position is designated as safety/security sensitive and requires pre-employment, reasonable suspicion, and random drug and alcohol screening.Job SummaryUnder the direct supervision of a Captain, this position involves fighting fires, providing emergency medical services, and responding to other emergency incidents to save lives and property. The role also includes related prevention, education, and support activities.Responsibilities and DutiesResponds to alarms and emergency calls as directed by a Captain, operating firefighting and other emergency response equipment to protect life and property.Rides on fire trucks, connects hoses to hydrants, and directs fire streams to extinguish fires in various situations, including residential, commercial, grass fires, and aircraft crashes.Performs rescue and medical assistance duties, such as removing victims from hazardous environments and freeing victims from trapped vehicles.Administers first aid as required.May serve as a vehicle driver or relief driver in the absence of the Apparatus Operator.Assists in inspecting firefighting apparatus, maintaining equipment, and reporting any mechanical failures.Attends training sessions and drills, participates in all assigned programs, and stays updated on firefighting, EMS, and emergency response techniques.Performs salvage and overhaul operations.Participates in pre-fire planning and fire prevention activities.Maintains the fire station, grounds, and equipment.Assists in public education activities.Participates in the department's physical fitness program.Follows orders and shows proper respect to supervisors.Performs other duties as assigned.Job RequirementsKnowledge of firefighting, rescue, and emergency response techniques, fire department operations, and equipment maintenance.Familiarity with City streets, hydrant locations, and water supply systems.Proficiency in basic algebraic functions and the operation of firefighting equipment.Ability to establish effective working relationships, follow instructions, and control emotions in stressful situations.Must possess a valid Oklahoma driver's license, be insurable, and able to pass a background check, polygraph, and the Candidate Physical Aptitude Test.Must meet medical requirements set by the Oklahoma Firefighters Pension and Retirement System.EMT-B National Registry certification is required.Other Significant FactsThis position is classified as "safety-sensitive" according to U.S. Department of Transportation regulations, the Oklahoma Standards for Workplace Drug and Alcohol Testing Act, and Oklahoma Medical Marijuana laws. Employees in this role are subject to drug and alcohol testing, including random testing. A medical marijuana license does not exempt employees from testing or consequences for testing positive.Difficulty of WorkThe work is skilled and requires thorough knowledge of emergency response procedures and equipment.Interpersonal RelationsEmployees frequently interact with the public in stressful situations and participate in pre-fire planning, fire prevention, and public education activities. Firefighters also share living quarters with other department personnel.Working ConditionsEmployees work 24-hour shifts, averaging 9 shifts per month, and are directly involved in firefighting, rescue, and emergency response activities. This work involves exposure to severe hazards and mental stress.Physical EffortThe role requires moderate to heavy physical activity during firefighting, emergency responses, equipment maintenance, and training. Employees must perform duties under extreme conditions, including wearing heavy protective equipment, working in high temperatures, and operating in hazardous environments.SupervisionWhile this role does not supervise others, employees may direct public actions during emergencies. Daily work is reviewed by a Captain and formally reviewed by the Fire Chief.Education and ExperienceMust have a high school diploma or equivalent.Must possess a valid Oklahoma driver's license and meet state pension requirements.Must pass a written and practical exam.EMT-B National Registry certification is required before the start date.Preferred skills include FFI, FF2, Hazmat Awareness, Hazmat Operations, Technical Rescue, Vehicle Extrication, CPR, LPG Emergency Operations, WMD Awareness, Computer Skills, and NIMS (IMS).Employment Type: Full-TimeSalary: $ 52,513.00 57,259.00 Per Hour
