The Costume Shop Manager works under the supervision of the Production Manager of the Aspen Opera Theater & VocalARTS (AOTVA) managing the implementation of costume design elements of mainstage opera productions and weekly opera scenes master classes. The AOTVA program is under the co-artistic direction of Renée Fleming and Patrick Summers. The upcoming season AMFS will present operas at the 2,050 seat Klein Music Tent, and Historic Wheeler Opera House throughout an encompassing 8-week summer season. This season's mainstage productions will be Benjamin Britten's A Midsummer Night's Dream and Mozart's The Magic Flute.

Responsibilities

  • Collaborate with the Production Manager and costume designers to estimate costs of build and rental, and track expenses while adhering to the budget amount designated to the costumes department.
  • Oversee the sourcing of all costume elements for assigned productions, whether that is purchasing, researching rentals or draping new costumes.
  • Collaborate with company management to schedule fittings and measurements as appropriate.
  • Work with stage management to produce clear wardrobe documentation.
  • Supervise all costume maintenance and storage, ensuring proper garment care.
  • Perform all necessary repairs and alterations as required.
  • Ensure the working area of the costume shop is clean, organized and machines are in good working order.
  • Attend technical rehearsals and note sessions to receive notes from the director.
  • Supervise the Assistant Costume Shop Manager and Stitcher and coordinate wardrobe crew schedule and duties.
  • Participate in wardrobe crew duties as necessary.

Requirements

  • BA/BFA in Technical Theater with an emphasis in costume design or equivalent professional experience. A minimum of 3 years of related experience required.
  • Skills in costume design interpretation and construction, draping, craft-painting, supervision, and budgeting.
  • Excellent stitching and draping skills.
  • Design experience is preferred.
  • Must be able to lift up to 40 lbs. and climb stairs and ladders comfortably.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, and knowledge of computers (Microsoft products) and information technology are essential.
  • Candidate must be independently motivated and able to set costume shop priorities
  • Must have a valid driver's license. Access to a vehicle is preferable for the summer. A DMV check will be conducted for the candidate hired.

June 4, 2026 to August 28, 2026

Compensation

$22.20/hour plus housing provided by AMFS (valued at a minimum of $5.16/hour depending on location.) Overtime $33.30/hour

Benefits include AMFS season pass and paid sick time.

Hiring Timeline
