Details of Research Project:

Human cytomegalovirus (CMV) is a β-herpes virus with high seroprevalence rates of 60-90% within the population and can spread through bodily fluids by both vertical and horizontal transmission. To address the urgent need for safe and novel anti-CMV therapies, the CMV entry N-arylpyrimidinamine (NAPA) inhibitors will be developed into safe and effective therapeutics to limit virus proliferation and spread. The postdoctoral fellow is expected identify and characterize lead compounds with validated mechanisms of action for new generation anti-CMV drugs. Additionally, these NAPA compounds will serve as probes to deepen the understanding of the early CMV life cycle. Specifically, the project will focus on characterizing the mechanism of action and target of NAPA compounds and evaluating the NAPA compounds to limit virus proliferation and spread using in vitro models. Based on this work, 1-2 lead compounds that show effective inhibition of human CMV proliferation and spread will be developed into prophylactics and therapeutics to limit the viral load in at-risk patient populations.
