C-13 Certified Blaster — Shipyard Operations
Position Summary:
The C-13 Certified Blaster is responsible for performing abrasive blasting operations on naval and commercial vessels to prepare metal surfaces for coating and preservation. This position requires a deep understanding of surface preparation standards, blasting media, and safety regulations in compliance with NAVSEA, SSPC, and OSHA requirements.
Key Responsibilities:
- Perform abrasive blasting on ship structures, tanks, voids, bilges, and other metal surfaces to meet specified cleanliness and surface profile requirements (e.g., SSPC-SP 5, SP 10, SP 11).
- Operate and maintain blasting equipment, including blast pots, air compressors, hoses, and nozzles.
- Properly select and handle abrasive materials such as steel grit, aluminum oxide, or garnet.
- Set up containment systems and ventilation in accordance with environmental and safety procedures.
- Conduct surface inspections before and after blasting to ensure quality and compliance with specifications.
- Work closely with coating inspectors and painters to ensure optimal surface readiness for coating applications.
- Follow all NAVSEA Standard Items, MIL-SPEC, and SSPC standards related to surface preparation and coating operations.
- Maintain cleanliness of work areas, tools, and equipment after operations.
- Adhere strictly to safety procedures, including respiratory protection, fall protection, and confined space entry requirements.
- Complete daily production and safety reports as required by supervision.
Qualifications:
- C-13 Certification (NAVSEA or equivalent) – Required.
- Minimum 2 years of experience performing abrasive blasting in a shipyard or industrial environment.
- Working knowledge of NAVSEA Standard Item 009-32, SSPC standards, and OSHA safety regulations.
- Ability to read and interpret job specifications, work instructions, and technical drawings.
- Must be physically capable of working in confined spaces, at heights, and in various weather conditions.
- Strong attention to detail and commitment to producing high-quality work.
Work Environment:
- Industrial and shipyard setting (dry docks, piers, inside tanks and compartments).
- Exposure to dust, noise, and heavy equipment.
- Requires use of full personal protective equipment (PPE) including blast hoods, respirators, and protective suits.
