Overview

The Metallurgical Manager role at Stainless Foundry & Engineering, Inc. is a critical position responsible for the overall direction, coordination, and evaluation of Metals Store. Also directly supervises the Metallurgical Engineer, the Process Engineer and as many as five non-supervisory employees in the Metal Lab. Carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organization's policies and applicable laws. Responsibilities include interviewing, hiring, and training employees; planning, assigning, and directing work; appraising performance; rewarding and disciplining employees, and addressing complaints and resolving problems.

Key Responsibilities

  • Manage the chemical and mechanical laboratories to provide accurate, timely, and economical services to support the foundry and machine shop operations.
  • Manage field failure analyses and in-plant quality improvement and cost reduction investigations using both in-house chemical, mechanical, and metallographic capabilities and outside services.
  • Manage the Metals Store to provide timely preparation of charges for the melting furnaces while minimizing melt stock inventories.
  • Manage the Metallurgical and Process Engineers and help direct activities.
  • Establish melting and heat treating practices and analytical methods for the several alloys.
  • Review instances of out-of-specification heats and determine their dispositions.
  • Facilitate improved efficiencies in metal-related activities throughout the plant, such as by conducting regular "metals meetings".
  • Provide metallurgical assistance to help resolve quality-related issues.
  • Provide technical support to customers, sales and customer service.
  • Oversee sand and investment process control testing by defining test regiment, working with, and training operators and technicians, observing trends in the testing and making adjustments to improve quality.
  • Maintain vendor contact relative to evaluation of new materials and processes.
  • Establish and document procedures for the purchasing, processing, and use of core and mold materials in foundries.
  • Design, conduct, and/or oversee long term projects to improve quality and reduce costs.
  • Support manufacturing by working with operators and supervisors to make improvements to quality, defining procedures, training where applicable.
  • Maintain all calibration of core and molding equipment.
  • Maintain all SPC charting of sands, slurries and coatings.
  • Ability to run D.O.E.'s for cost and/or process improvements

Education and Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Metallurgy or Metallurgical Engineering from a four-year college or university
     and five years related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Local to Milwaukee area
  • Proven experience in the steel manufacturing industry, preferably in casting or forging.
  • Ability to work with mathematical concepts such as probability and statistical inference, and fundamentals of plane and solid geometry and trigonometry. Ability to apply concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios, and proportions to practical situations.
  • Knowledge of quality management systems and compliance requirements for nuclear, military, commercial, and aerospace/defense sectors
  • Familiarity with Pressure Equipment Directive (PED) compliance
  • Strong understanding of statistical process control (SPC) and Six Sigma methodologies
  • Experience with quality management software and data analysis tools
  • Demonstrated leadership and team management skills
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Strong problem-solving and analytical abilities
  • Experience with lean manufacturing principles and continuous improvement methodologies
  • Knowledge of industry-specific regulations and standards (e.g., ASME, ASTM, API)
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office suite and quality management software

Stainless Foundry & Engineering
 is a one stop shop on Milwaukee's north side. We offer two foundries in one, a sand casting division and investment casting division, together with Machine Shop services. As your single source for dual casting processes, there's no need to work with two foundries for the different types of casting and we can also recommend which might best fit your requirements. Our sand casting capacity ranges from 50 lbs. to 7,000+ lbs. furnace capacity, while our investment castings range from less than 1 lb. to 350 lbs.

Over 250 alloys are poured at SF&E, with groups including: Stainless Steel, Hardenable & Non-Hardenable, Heat-Resistant Stainless, Nickel Alloys, Cobalt Alloys, Carbon & Low-Alloy Steels, Cast Irons, Tool Steels and Specialty Alloys.

Our Machine Shop services include specialized turning and milling machining services. Our machining capabilities range from ounces to 600 lbs and enable us to manufacture parts with intricate geometry and detail while maintaining high precision and accuracy.
