Sanitation Equipment Operator III

Under the supervision of the Sanitation Services Supervisor, the Equipment Operator III is responsible for the collection and disposal of solid waste and recyclable material. The employee in this position operates a solid waste collection vehicle along scheduled pick-up routes and performs maintenance on related equipment. The Equipment Operator III ensures compliance with city ordinances on solid waste disposal at the pick-up point.      

Essential Functions: 

  • Operates collection vehicle;
  • Screens questionable material placed out for pickup and determines unsuitable items;
  • Performs daily pre and post-operation checks on vehicle; 
  • Performs minor maintenance on division vehicles, waste bins and receptacles;
  • Washes carts and bins as needed;
  • Completes related customer service tasks including service starts/stops, replacement of unserviceable containers, distribution of educational literature, etc.
  • May handle or process hazardous materials including refrigerant reclamation;
  • Cooperates with the public along the collection route;
  • Advises supervisor on relevant issues; 

Marginal Functions: 

  • May supervise one or two solid waste collectors; provides field training to subordinate personnel; 
  • May occasionally supervise division operations;       
  • May perform some street and alley maintenance duties;
  • Other related duties as deemed necessary or as required. 

Position Requirements 

Education:  High school diploma or GED preferred.  Possession of a class B commercial driver's license with air brake endorsement. Will be required to obtain National Incident Management System (NIMS) Training, ISO 100, 200 and 700.

Experience:  Three to six months related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.

Skills:  Thorough knowledge of solid waste equipment and collection routes. General knowledge of hazardous materials. Excellent safe driving skills required. Ability to operate a heavy truck, hydraulic compactor and other related equipment. 

Problem Solving:  Occasional problem solving exists in this position. Problems include machinery and equipment malfunctions, maintaining public safety in a potentially hazardous work environment.

Decision Making:  Some decision making exists in this position. Decisions include materials screening, equipment maintenance needs.

Accountability:   Employee is responsible for performing assigned duties efficiently, public safety in work area, customer satisfaction within program guidelines and for proper use and maintenance of equipment and machinery.  

Personal Relations:  Limited contact with other city departments and occasional contact with the public. Continual exposure to the public while working routes.

Supervisory Responsibilities:  May lead a work crew.

Residency Requirement: Must live within 20 miles of intersection of First and Main streets. 

Working conditions:  Manual labor is required. Environmental and hazardous conditions exist. Occasionally exposed to extreme weather conditions including wet and/or humid conditions, heat or cold; frequently exposed to moving mechanical parts and vehicular traffic; frequent exposure to biological and injurious hazards associated with the handling of refuse. 

Physical Requirements:  The Equipment Operator III's physical job demands include an frequent lift of up to 75 lbs floor to shoulder; occasional carry of up to 75 lbs 10 feet; occasional horizontal push/pull force of up to 50 lbs; occasional grip force of up to 40 lbs using 1 or 2 hands; frequent climb; occasional forward reach; frequent overhead reach; occasional bend; occasional crouch/kneel; occasional neck rotation; occasional trunk rotation; occasional balance; continuous hand coordination; continuous foot coordination; continuous sitting; occasional standing; and occasional walking.
