Summary:

Reporting to the Provost, the Dean of the Faculty oversees multiple academic units and programs, including the five Schools, the General Education Program, the Honors Program, and the Office of Sponsored Programs.

Job Description:

  • Serves as the primary role model of an accomplished teacher, scholar, and administrator to the faculty, staff and students; serves as the chief spokesperson and advocate for the programs and services to all constituents, including current and prospective faculty, staff, and students; and establishes an overall climate in which shared governance thrives.

  • Provides long-range strategic planning and direction to the academic programs and policies; establishes major overall objectives in concert with Gallaudet's strategic plan, and ensures their timely and effective completion.

  • Works with appropriate faculty governance units to create and evaluate innovative teaching and learning programs, stressing the use of current trends in the college classroom; works with school directors and appropriate faculty governance units to ensure that curricula and course offerings meet the ever-changing needs of an increasing population of students and an increasingly technological society; and ensures that decision-making is made at the appropriate level.

  • Leads the weekly meetings of the School Directors; and supervises the School Directors and staff team in the Office of the Dean of the Faculty.

  • Oversees personnel actions with the goal of building a pool of qualified faculty; reviews and gives final approval for initial appointments, reappointments, non-reappointments and promotions; makes final decisions on grievances; reviews and approves requests for tenure and dismissal before submission to the Provost; works to ensure Academic Affairs-wide consistency in faculty and staff personnel actions including evaluations, merit increase decisions, and decisions related to reappointment, promotion and tenure; and assures that grievances and concerns from faculty, staff and students are promptly addressed and appropriately resolved, whether within the School or through other channels. 

  • Develops and implements innovative strategies to recruit and retain faculty from different backgrounds through a variety of initiatives as part of Gallaudet's commitment to academic excellence.

  • Sponsors colloquia and special projects that stimulate scholarly discussion, debate, and development of research ideas, scholarship, and creative works.

  • Promotes discussion and exploration of new ways of teaching and learning in higher education, especially for deaf and hard of hearing students. This includes various forms of distance education, certificante programs, and associate's degrees.

  • Achieves streamlined practices and processes related to the needs of faculty, staff and students by participating in the Academic Affairs Senior Administrators and other organizations in the Provost's management team, composed of top administrators; and works with team members to solve administrative problems collaboratively.

  • Works with other responsible units, including the Enrollment Office and the Office of Academic and Career Success, to establish student enrollment, recruitment and retention goals and develops and implements plans to achieve them; and participates in the recruitment, enrollment and retention of students from different backgrounds.

  • Formulates and administers the budget through a participatory process (subject to approval through the University administration's budget approval process); assumes the responsibility for all aspects of the budget of the Office of the Dean of the Faculty; authorizes expenditures in accordance with University policies; and develops budget reports and projections as needed or requested.

  • Works with the Provost and the Executive Director of Institutional Advancement to set development goals and implements plans to achieve them; oversees research projects and grant activities; and participates actively in all types of fundraising efforts. 

  • Supports the Associate Dean of the Graduate School and the Strategic Research Officer in overseeing the graduate curriculum, new program development, and fulfillment of research goals.

  • Oversees the accreditation process of undergraduate programs and collaborates with the Dean of Curriculum, Outreach, Resources and Effectiveness and the Associate Dean of the Graduate School in overseeing accreditation activities and program reviews of undergraduate and graduate programs.

  • Provides or arranges for the provision of, policy guidance and technical assistance for the Council on Undergraduate Education (CUE); drafts policies for faculty reviews; directs and reviews program and curriculum development; oversees the maintenance of the permanent records of the CUE and Faculty Senate actions pertinent to undergraduate education; and ensures the dissemination of these records to appropriate audiences, particularly the Registrar and the catalog production, in a timely manner.

  • Provides a centralized and streamlined one-stop place for record keeping in terms of undergraduate student-related policy violations including Academic Integrity.

  • Inspires and motivates faculty to use innovative pedagogy, including technologies to augment and transform teaching and learning. 

  • In partnership with the Director of Distance Education, catalyzes and supports digital learning innovation on campus and online, including digital adaptive learning, to serve a ASL/English bilingual, and global multicultural community.

  • Partners with other colleagues, including but not limited to other members of the Academic Affairs Senior Administrators and division leaders, in order to advance the academic mission of the university. 

  • Provides expertise, creativity, and visionary leadership to support learning opportunities that offer flexibility to Gallaudet students, reach the extended community of alumni and prospective students and extend Gallaudet's global impact. 

  • Encourages and fosters a culture of inquiry about student learning by collecting, analyzing, and distributing data on the quality of instructional design, teaching, and learning throughout the learning ecosystem; and supports continuous improvement and Gallaudet's status as a doctoral/high research university, supports scholarship, creative activity and research among all schools.

  • Establishes and maintains a positive and supportive working relationship with co-workers and supervisor.

  • Prioritizes safety in the workplace as a collective responsibility for the well-being of employees and fosters a culture of safety that is integral to our success, including strict adherence to safety procedures and protocols, as well as promptly reporting any safety hazards or incidents.

  • Serves as a mandatory reporter under Title IX and commits to completing the Title IX training and compliance requirements on an annual basis.

  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications:

  • Earned doctoral degree. 

  • Earned tenure from a higher education institution.

  • A minimum of five years of professional experience with academic administration, education management, or a related field. 

  • Ability to communicate in American Sign Language. 

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Supervisory experience.

  • Strong familiarity with higher education  curriculum, policies and procedures.

  • Strong familiarity with current issues affecting education and the student experience.

  • Strong initiative, problem-solving, and data-based decision-making skills.

  • Strong ability to work independently and efficiently, to prioritize and effectively manage multiple responsibilities under pressure and/or time constraints.

  • Demonstrated ability to work with and across University departments, outside constituents and groups.
