Job Description Summary:

The Department of Data Science at William & Mary, a public university of the Commonwealth of Virginia, seeks applications for a tenure track position at the Assistant Professor level. We seek candidates focused on methodological innovation in large-scale and multi-modal data, with foci in causal AI, uncertainty quantification, physical AI, and/or information theory. Appointment will begin August 10, 2026. We are interested in individuals with research and teaching expertise that pushes theoretical boundaries - especially interdisciplinary engagement that advances discovery in the physical or environmental sciences - with an emphasis on creating broadly applicable foundational methods that enable cross-domain discovery.

Successful candidates will be expected to develop and sustain an externally funded research program that fosters a dynamic lab environment engaging Data Science Ph.D., masters and undergraduate students; mentor, supervise, and train students in research; and teach one course per semester while developing curriculum that bridges disciplinary boundaries. They will also provide service to the Department, School, and University, and contribute to the growth and reputation of the unit.

Ideal applicants will have a broad fluency in probabilistic modeling, Bayesian or other approaches to uncertainty, theoretical foundations of causation, and computational techniques that support scalable inference and learning. They should demonstrate a strong record or promise in publishing methodologically innovative work. Demonstrated experience coordinating collaborations across domains (e.g. with physics, engineering, geoscience, or environmental science) is preferred.

  • Evidence of scholarly achievement or demonstrated potential as a scholar.

  • Grant writing experience.
