Job Summary

The Department of Social and Behavioral Sciences at Savannah State University (SSU) seeks applicants for a 10-month, tenure-track, Assistant Professor of History position beginning Fall 2026. The successful applicant will teach United States and world history surveys, African American history, and be open to teaching critical thinking in the humanities. The candidate must demonstrate proficiency in online and in-person course delivery, experiential learning strategies, and contribute to the innovation of the field.

NOTE: In compliance with federal law, all persons hired will be required to verify identity and eligibility to work in the United States and to complete the required eligibility verification form upon hire. This position does not offer sponsorship for employment visas.

Responsibilities
  • Teach 24 credit hours per academic year (in-person and online)
  • Support student success through effective teaching, mentoring, advising and student engagement
  • Participate in student recruitment and retention efforts
  • Engage in scholarly activities that contribute to the advancement of the discipline
  • Participate in institutional, community, and professional service activities
  • Participate in curriculum development and program assessment
  • Engage in professional growth and development appropriate to the discipline
  • Fulfill additional responsibilities outlined in the University Faculty Handbook
  • Manage and utilize online platforms effectively, with a preference for experience using Desire2Learn
  • Contribute to a positive work environment in the department and the University
  • Engage with industry partners, professionals in the field, alumni, and the broader community to support workforce development initiatives.
Required Qualifications
  • Ph.D. in History or related field from an accredited institution(s)
  • Applicants with a doctorate in a related field must have at least 18 graduate credit hours in history
  • ABD candidates welcome to apply and must provide evidence of degree completion within the first year of hire.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Ph.D. in History
  • Two years of online teaching experience at the collegiate level
Proposed Salary

The proposed salary range is $60, $62,776.00 annually.

  • Ability to foster critical thinking and historical inquiry among students.
