Join our team as a Volunteer Coordinator – make a meaningful impact in your community

The Parks & Recreation Department is seeking a dedicated and organized Volunteer Coordinator to lead and manage our department's Volunteer Program. In this vital role, you will oversee all aspects of the program's operations, from recruitment and engagement to compliance and risk management. As the Volunteer Coordinator, you will serve as the primary liaison between the department and internal partners – include legal, risk management and public safety departments – to ensure that all volunteer activities are conducted safely, ethically and in full compliance with city policies and regulations.

This is an exciting opportunity for someone passionate about community service and volunteerism to play a key role in enhancing public programs and services through civic engagement.

As a key position within the Parks & Recreation Department, the Volunteer Coordinator will play a vital role, reporting to the Mountain Open Space Rivers and Ecosystems (M.O.R.E.) Manager to create a robust new division. Regular functions and core responsibilities will include:

  • Collaborative Program Development: Partner with internal divisions to identify volunteer needs, design roles and implement effective placement strategies for new volunteers.
  • Volunteer Recruitment & Engagement: Recruit, screen and place volunteers in roles that align with their skills and the goals of the department. Ensure volunteers are supported, empowered and set up for success.
  • Training & Onboarding: Develop program policies, onboarding materials and training tools to prepare volunteers for their assignments and maintain consistent standards.
  • Program Evaluation & Reporting: Monitor volunteer programs through data collection and reporting. Conduct regular assessments to evaluate impact and identify areas for improvement.
  • Recognition & Retention: Organize and support both formal and informal volunteer appreciate events and initiatives to promote long-term engagement and retention.
  • Budget Oversight: Develop and manage the volunteer program budget by tracking expenditures and ensuring alignment with approved funding and goals.
  • Technology & Process Improvement: Research and implement tools and technologies that improve volunteer management, enhance the volunteer experience and streamline administrative tasks.
  • Strategic Planning: Work closely with management to align volunteer efforts with departmental objectives, creating sustainable and impactful program solutions.

Requirements:

Education:

  • Bachelor's degree in any field or equivalent

Experience:

  • Minimum of three years' related experience.
  • Requires a working knowledge of specialized practices, equipment and procedures

Physical Demands:

  • Exerting 20-50 lbs. occasionally

Licenses and Certifications:

  • Valid AZ Driver's License

Preferred/Desirable Qualifications:

  • Experience in a municipal or government setting.
  • Previous supervisory experience is preferred.
