Under general supervision, performs semi-skilled maintenance and roadway construction work for the City's Public Works Department. Work involves maintaining the City's streets, curbs and sidewalks, and applying tar and asphalt to patch and repair streets. Employee is also responsible for operating heavy equipment and performing preventive maintenance on the City's equipment, and maintaining records of such maintenance. Ability to finish concrete sidewalks or cubing considered a plus. Reports to the Labor Supervisor.Â

  • Maintains and repairs City streets, curbs, and sidewalks; grades and paves new streets, patches and repairs existing streets, curbs and sidewalks.
  • Operates heavy equipment for digging holes, loading materials, compacting asphalt, distributing tar, etc., such as backhoes, front-end loaders, compactors, rollers, tar distributors, etc.
  • Installs and repairs storm drainage pipes, manholes, curbs and gutters; sets and finishes concrete; patches asphalt; landscapes roadways; installs curveboards.
  • Cleans ditches and storm drains.
  • Operates snow removal equipment, removing snow and ice from City streets.
  • Performs other related duties as required.

Street Maintenance worker I: Graduation from high school and 5 to 11 months as a laborer in maintenance and roadway construction; or any equivalent combination of training and experience which provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities. Must possess a valid driver's license.

Salary is based upon qualifications: $35,092 - $44,883

Street Maintenance Worker II: Graduation from high school and 5 to 11 months as a laborer in maintenance and roadway construction; or any equivalent combination of training and experience which provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities. Must possess a valid commercial driver's license B.Â

Salary is based upon qualifications $38,690 - $47,811

  • Knowledge of the standard methods, materials and equipment employed in basic construction and maintenance operations.
  • Knowledge of the geographical layout of the City.
  • Knowledge of and is able to use equipment, materials and tools used in the construction and maintenance trades.
  • Skilled in the use of backhoes, front-end loaders, dump trucks, rollers, air hammers, power and skill saws, etc.
  • Ability to perform strenuous work under varying weather conditions.
  • Ability to understand and follow oral instructions.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships as necessitated by work assignments.
  • Ability to compare and/or judge the readily observable, functional, structural, or compositional characteristics (whether similar to or divergent from obvious standards) of data, people or things.
  • Ability of speaking and/or signaling people to convey or exchange information. Includes receiving instructions, assignments or directions from supervisor.
  • Ability to read simple forms; prepare time sheets and leave slips using prescribed format.
  • Ability to apply principles of logical thinking to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions.
  • Ability to record and deliver information, to explain procedures, to follow oral and written instructions.
  • Ability to communicate effectively and efficiently in Standard English.
  • Ability to utilize mathematical formulas; add, subtract, multiply and divide.
  • Ability to inspect items for proper length, width and shape.
