Sign Technician

Under regular supervision, performs skilled technical work in the installation and maintenance of street signs, instructional or directional signs, and other signs for City use. Work involves installing, and maintaining street and informational signs; setting up and removing barricades; removing and adding signs; removing graffiti from signs; and driving heavy equipment. This position requires the employee to work different shifts to include nights and weekends. Reports to the Sign Mechanic.

Essential Job Functions- Installs, removes, replaces, repairs, and maintains traffic signs, street signs, directional, and informational signs.
- Sets up and removes barricades from work areas and detours.
- Inventories materials; reports any necessary materials needs.
- Removes and adds signs and meter posts for new construction.
- Removes graffiti from signs.
- Operates a variety of heavy equipment.
- Receives and/or reviews various records and reports including maintenance and repair report.
- Prepares and/or processes various records and reports including equipment inspection form, and activity reports.
- Refers to equipment maintenance manuals, SDS forms, employee handbook, traffic control manual (MUTCD and WAPM , etc.
- Operates a variety of equipment such as mechanic tools, posthole digger, bucket truck, etc.
- Uses a variety of tools such as mechanic tools, power tools, vehicle pressure washer, etc.; and a variety of supplies such as construction supplies, replacement parts, maintenance forms, equipment inspection forms, etc.
- Interacts and communicates with various groups and individuals including Sign Mechanic, other employees, and the general public.
- Responds to emergencies.
- Performs other related duties as required.
Requires a high school diploma or GED equivalent; or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience that provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities. Must possess and maintain a valid State driver's license.
Must be certified by IMSA in Signs and Markings Level I or certified within 24 months of employment. A valid driver's license is required. A Commercial driver's license Class A must be obtained in 120 days of employment
Supplemental Information- Knowledge of the methods, procedures, and policies of the Traffic Engineering Division as they pertain to the performance of duties of the Sign Technician.
- Knowledge of the laws, ordinances, standards, and regulations pertaining to the specific duties and responsibilities of the position.
- Ability to comprehend, interpret, and apply regulations, procedures, and related information. Has knowledge of the methods, materials, tools, and equipment used in road sign fabrication, maintenance, and installation.
- Ability to safety and skillfully operate trucks and equipment necessary for assigned tasks.
- Knowledge of and skill in the use of computers and other graphics production equipment.
- Knowledge of the occupational hazards and safety precautions of the industry; able to work effectively despite occasional exposure to extreme weather and temperatures, wetness/humidity, machinery hazards, traffic hazards, dust, fumes, above-average noise, odors, smoke, vibrations, etc.
- Ability to offer training and assistance to co-workers and employees of other departments as required.
- Ability to learn and utilize new skills and information to improve job performance and efficiency. Has the mathematical ability to handle required calculations.
- Ability to read and understand work orders, equipment manuals, and other materials pertaining to the responsibilities of the job.
- Ability to prepare simple records with accuracy and in a timely manner.
- Knowledge of the terminology used within the department.
- Knowledge of how to maintain effective relationships with personnel of other departments, professionals, and members of the public through contact and cooperation.
- Knowledge of how to react calmly and quickly in emergency situations.
- Ability to compare and/or judge the readily observable functional, structural or compositional characteristics (whether similar to or divergent from obvious standards) of data, people, or things.
- Ability of speaking and/or signaling people to convey or exchange information. Includes receiving assignments and/or direction from supervisor and giving instructions to assistants.
