Job Summary:
The Nurse Unit Manager oversees the daily clinical operations of an assigned nursing unit within the skilled nursing facility. This role ensures high-quality resident care, regulatory compliance, appropriate staffing, and effective communication among residents, families, staff, and providers. The Unit Manager serves as a clinical leader, mentor, and resource to nursing staff.
Key Responsibilities
Clinical Oversight & Resident Care
- Supervise and coordinate all nursing care delivered on the assigned unit.
- Perform assessments, monitor changes in condition, and ensure timely interventions.
- Oversee completion and accuracy of nursing documentation, care plans, and progress notes.
- Ensure compliance with federal, state, and local regulations (CMS, state DOH).
- Collaborate with physicians, therapy, and interdisciplinary team members to optimize resident outcomes.
Leadership & Staff Management
- Provide direct supervision to CNAs, LPNs/LVNs, and RNs on the unit.
- Monitor staffing levels, adjust assignments, and support scheduling needs.
- Coach, train, and mentor staff; participate in onboarding of new team members.
- Conduct performance evaluations and assist with corrective action when needed.
- Foster a positive, supportive, and high-accountability work culture.
Quality Assurance & Compliance
- Participate in audits, QAPI initiatives, and infection control practices.
- Ensure accurate and timely completion of incident reports and follow-up.
- Monitor medication administration practices and reduce med errors.
- Ensure proper implementation of care plans and physician orders.
Communication & Family Relations
- Communicate proactively with residents and families regarding care, changes in condition, and concerns.
- Participate in care conferences and interdisciplinary meetings.
- Actively resolve complaints and escalate issues appropriately.
Operational Duties
- Maintain unit organization, timely chart checks, and compliance with policies.
- Assist DON/ADON with surveys, clinical processes, and regulatory preparation.
- Coordinate staffing, supplies, and workflow to support efficient operations.
- Support admissions, transfers, and discharges on the unit.
Qualifications
- Valid RN or LPN/LVN license (state-specific).
- One or more years of experience in long-term care or skilled nursing preferred.
- Prior leadership or charge nurse experience strongly desired.
- Knowledge of SNF regulations, MDS processes, infection control, and care planning.
- Strong clinical assessment, organizational, and communication skills.
