In accordance with a detailed cleaning plan, the Custodian performs general and specific cleaning and maintenance tasks to provide a clean, safe, and pleasant physical environment. They perform other tasks as assigned in emergency or unusual situations with specific guidance from the supervisor. Examples of additional work to be performed include but are not limited to:

  • Perform work that constitutes a direct service of the department to ensure a comfortable, safe, and clean environment in which the University community can live, learn, and work.

  • Represent the department with the University community and its visitors, behaving in a professional manner.

  • Keep informed of departmental and University rules, regulations, and guides pertaining to employment obligations, including complying with attendance and clocking in and out on time.

  • Work with other University Facilities staff as part of a team, being flexible with schedule to accommodate emergency situations such as staffing shortages and snow removal.

Work Interactions

This position reports directly to one of the Custodial Supervisors (one of four-night supervisors, one of three Residential Custodial Supervisors, an Evening Custodial Supervisor, a Day Custodial Supervisor, or a Weekend Custodial Supervisor). The position may report indirectly to a Night Operations Manager depending on the shift assigned. The incumbent will work alone or with others, and perform essential or non-essential tasks as assigned by a supervisor. They will also perform assignments made by the Manager of Custodial Services and/or the Night Operations Manager. Under certain circumstances including but not limited to, emergency snow removal, spills, and flooding, the Custodian will perform assignments made by the Work Management Center, the Director of Facilities Management, the Resource Manager, the Infrastructure Manager, and other department managers.

Requirements and Qualifications

  • High School Diploma or GED preferred

  • One year of custodial work experience is preferred

  • Requires valid and current driver's license from Maryland, Virginia, or District of Columbia

  • Requires a basic knowledge of English including the ability to read, write and speak English with understanding in order to read and understand product label instructions and University policies and procedures

  • Must be able to relate custodial and maintenance problems clearly to supervisor and/or the Work Management Center

  • Will be required to complete a training program in building cleaning
