JOB TITLE: Private Lead Locate Technician – Locate Division

STATUS: Full Time, Non-Exempt (Hourly) Employee

RELEVANT WORK EXPERIENCE: Utility locating, and Private locating experience required.

Reports to: Imaging Services/Private Locate Supervisor

Location: Indiana

JOB SUMMARY:

As a Private Lead Locate Technician, you will be responsible for locating private underground utilities for clients and property owners based on 811 tickets per 811 dig laws. This position requires a combination of technical expertise, customer relations, and excellent communication skills to drive excellence within the team.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Engage daily with clients to address private locate requests and concerns.
  • Schedule private locates promptly.
  • Communicate with and assign private locates to locators as needed.
  • Expand the customer base for private locate services.
  • Perform locates using Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR) and concrete hand scanners.
  • Coordinate ticket volume with your supervisor on days when you have private locates scheduled or will be out of your area.
  • Assist with damage investigations as required.
  • Regularly check and respond to emails and text messages, acknowledging received communications.
  • Support safety initiatives in line with company policy.
  • Provide daily support to team members regarding issues or concerns related to private locating.
  • Locate underground utilities for clients and property owners in compliance with 811 dig laws.
  • Utilize utility maps, as-built civil engineering drawings, GIS information, and various locating equipment.
  • Mark the location of underground utilities using flags and/or paint.
  • Prepare reports, forms, and memos to document completed work and any problems encountered
  • or resolved.
  • Take photos of located utility lines for each 811 ticket.
  • Investigate and prepare detailed written documentation for excavations that result in damage to underground utilities.
  • Use a cell phone-based app to record locating marks for client properties, allowing for the storage of photos and completion of all necessary documentation.
  • Although not on the on-call rotation roster, coordinate and schedule emergency private locates as they arise.

JOB REQUIREMENTS:

  • Attention to detail; strong focus on accuracy and thoroughness in all tasks.
  • Willingness to travel (25% +).
  • Excellent troubleshooting and problem-solving skills.
  • Expertise in locate industry.
  • Ability to maintain a consistent teamwork mentality.
  • Knowledge of Northern Lights policies.
  • Good verbal and written communication skills.
  • Able to pass a drug and alcohol screen.
  • Must have a valid Driver's License and the ability to obtain a DOT physical certification.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:

  • Preferred experience in underground utility locating.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office.
  • Proficiency in reading utility maps.
  • Ability to present professionally and foster a learning environment.

WORKING CONDITIONS:

  • Dayshift work primarily, with occasional alternative shift work.
  • Exposure to dust, dirt, foul odors, irritating noises, extreme weather conditions, and other safety hazards. Exposure to moving mechanical parts, equipment, fumes, airborne particles, high places, toxic chemicals, and electrical shock risk.
  • Loud noise level environments.
  • Employees are expected to have, utilize, maintain, and wear all Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) as required by Northern Lights Locating, the client and any other applicable regulatory agency or management directive.
