Role Overview of a Director of IT Infrastructure:  

The Director of IT Infrastructure is a strategic IT leader responsible for the reliability, security, scalability, and operational maturity of the company's core technology platforms, providing strategic direction, standards, and accountability. This position provides strategic and operational leadership across infrastructure, cloud services, end-user computing, and technical support functions, ensuring that foundational systems consistently enable business operations and growth. This includes responsibility for cloud and network platforms, workplace and collaboration technologies, end-user devices, and technology supporting physical security and facilities-integrated systems.

This role balances day-to-day operational excellence with forward-looking infrastructure strategy. The Director is accountable for building a resilient, well-governed infrastructure organization that supports modern delivery, protects the enterprise, and improves the overall technology experience for employees and business partners.

Responsibilities of a Director of IT Infrastructure:

  • Regular and timely attendance in the office is an essential function of the position.
  • Infrastructure Strategy & Operational Leadership
    • Own the stability, performance, and availability of enterprise infrastructure services, including network, cloud, systems, workplace technology, collaboration platforms, and end-user environments.
    • Establish infrastructure standards, architectures, and operational practices aligned with business needs and technology strategy.
    • Lead proactive planning for capacity, resiliency, disaster recovery, and infrastructure lifecycle management.
  • Cloud & Platform Services
    • Provide strategic leadership for cloud infrastructure and platform services, including governance, cost management, and operational consistency.
    • Partner with application, data, and security teams to ensure infrastructure supports reliable delivery and runtime operations.
    • Drive automation and modernization initiatives to improve scalability, reliability, and operational efficiency.
  • Service Desk & End-User Computing
    • Oversee service desk and end-user support functions to ensure timely, professional, and consistent support across the organization.
    • Establish service standards, metrics, and continuous improvement practices focused on user experience and operational effectiveness.
    • Ensure appropriate tooling, documentation, and self-service capabilities are in place to reduce friction and improve outcomes. Ensure reliable support and lifecycle management for workplace technologies, including conferencing systems, mobile devices, and technology integrated into office and security environments.

    • Lead, mentor, and develop infrastructure and support leaders and engineers.
    • Establish clear expectations, accountability, and growth paths for team members.
    • Foster a culture of ownership, collaboration, and continuous improvement within the infrastructure organization.
  • Governance, Risk & Partnership
    • Partner closely with Information Security to ensure infrastructure meets security, compliance, and risk management standards.
    • Define and enforce operational processes for incident, problem, and change management.
    • Manage vendor relationships and infrastructure budgets with transparency and fiscal discipline.
  • Alignment with Business and IT Strategy
    • Collaborate with the VP of IT Strategy to align infrastructure priorities with enterprise initiatives and long-term technology roadmaps.
    • Provide infrastructure insight and guidance during planning, prioritization, and major initiative execution.
    • Ensure infrastructure capabilities evolve in support of business growth and organizational change.

Skills and Qualifications of a Director of IT Infrastructure :

  • Bachelor's degree in Information Technology, Computer Science, or a related field. A master's degree preferred.
  • 10+ years of progressive experience in IT infrastructure, operations, software development, or platform engineering roles.
  • 5+ years of experience leading infrastructure, cloud, or operations teams.
  • Demonstrated experience operating in complex or regulated environments.
  • Strong understanding of enterprise networking, cloud platforms, systems administration, and end-user computing.
  • Proven leadership experience managing both engineering and support organizations.
  • Ability to balance operational stability with modernization and improvement initiatives.
  • Strong communication and collaboration skills across technical and non-technical stakeholders.
  • Experience managing vendors, budgets, and operational risk.
  • Cloud platform certifications (AWS, Azure, or equivalent) are preferred.
  • ITIL, infrastructure, or operations-focused certifications are a plus.
