Purpose:    The principal provides educational leadership in the building; administers, manages, and supervises the educational program; supports, authorizes, and enforces policies, procedures, and practices established by the Board of Education and supported by the administration.

Qualifications:    

  1. Master's degree in Educational Administration with Building Level Leadership endorsement. 
  2. Licensed by Kansas State Department of Education
  3. Health and inoculation certificate on file in the Central Office (after employment offer is made). Must maintain current TB testing as required by Health Department regulations.
  4. Ability to lift 50 pounds, bend, stoop, kneel, turn, reach.
  5. Ability to work in frequently noisy and crowded environments with numerous interruptions.

Essential Functions:

  1. Supports and works to implement the district mission, goals, and objectives.
  2. Demonstrates proficiency in educational leadership and supervision of instruction, planning, coordination, communications, decision-making, diplomacy, counseling, and organizational support.
  3. Understands best instructional practices for identified curriculum, standards, and performance outcomes.
  4. Demonstrates proficiency in fiscal/budget and personnel management, school administration and public relations.
  5. Demonstrates patience and imagination.
  6. Demonstrates ability to use technology.
  7. Desires personal professional growth, including but not limited to that supplied by the district.
  8. Demonstrates ability to establish and maintain a positive learning climate with appropriate discipline methods and practices.
  9. Meets all district safety requirements.

General Responsibilities:

  1. Designs, schedules, and oversees comprehensive educational and activities programs to access best instructional practices.
  2. Instigates, promotes, and assists in curriculum improvement.
  3. Makes regular classroom visits.
  4. Encourages planning and continuous study of trends and best practices to insure improved student achievement/performance.
  5. Organizes faculty sessions for improvement and problem solving as relates to student achievement and school climate.
  6. Supervises and approves staff and individual professional development goals and objectives.
  7. Direct compilation and security of accurate student records, including but not limited to attendance, academic, activities, financial, permanent, cumulative, and personnel.
  8. Authorizes student absence or dismissal prior to regularly scheduled time, based on authority by parents and consistent with Board policies.
  9. Promotes teacher contact with parents in conferences where student's learning may be facilitated.
  10. Uses computers and other equipment to generate and utilize timely and accurate data.
  11. Makes fiscal, administrative, and instructional decisions in assigned school.
  12. Completes reports accurately and in a timely manner.
  13. Facilitates cooperative staff planning.
  14. Accounts for any and all funds associated with the building.
  15. Promotes and enforces USD 264 policies, regulations, and practices.
  16. Establishes rules for providing proper order in the building and on school grounds.
  17. Selects highest qualified staff to fill vacancies.
  18. Supervises/evaluates staff in an efficient and effective manner.
  19. Schedules school, class, or extra-curricular activities and coordinates with other district administrators.
  20. Communicates and interprets school policy and practices to parents, students, staff, and public.
  21. Implements a continuous program of public relations and information concerning programs, services, and activities.
  22. Keeps and secures accurate and complete class and student records, giving direction for safekeeping and accuracy standards.
  23. Supervises all non-academic as well as academic activities placed under his/her jurisdiction.
  24. Promotes health and safety policies/regulations/procedures.
  25. Provides and monitors school ground surveillance; ensures that individuals who remain on grounds are authorized.
  26. Authorizes requisitions originating in the building.
  27. Safeguards and maintains supplies and equipment as per district policy/regulation.
  28. Assures supervision of local and away school activities.
  29. Investigates/mediates complaints.
  30. Creates and administers a communication plan that provides information on a frequent basis to all stakeholders. (Newsletters, WAAG, Board Reports, etc.)

Other duties:

  1. Ensures the school is conducive to learning.
  2. Supervises personnel and students.
  3. Supervises inventory of all equipment.
  4. Performs other duties, tasks, responsibilities as assigned by the superintendent.
