Production Manager

MOXIE Theatre is seeking a collaborative, creative, and detail-oriented person to coordinate and oversee all technical and production aspects of our theatrical productions and special events. Our ideal candidate is passionate about the arts, gender equity, and radical inclusion, and has some professional experience in Production Management and/or Stage Management.

This role is part-time, with an average of 25 hours per week, but flexing between 20-30 hours depending on production schedules. It is an ideal position for a professional looking to grow in their career, and to share their passion for creating inclusive production environments and fostering emerging, diverse talents in the local theatre community. Compensation:
 $22-26/hour, commensurate with experience

Duties & Responsibilities

Artistic

  • Read and analyze production scripts to determine production requirements.
  • Work with Executive Artistic Director to develop season schedule for all productions and expanded programming.
  • With the input of appropriate technical staff, analyze all designs submitted to determine the feasibility of execution within the allotted time, budget and personnel available.
  • Attend first read-throughs, designer runs, technical rehearsals, and previews for all productions.

Financial

  • Develop and supervise production budgets with Executive Artistic Director.
  • Process, track, and reconcile all production expenses.

Managing Production Personnel

  • Hire production staff and contractors. Develop working relationships with San Diego area designers, production managers, technicians, and schools to actively scout new talent.
  • Act as a liaison between directors, designers, stage managers, and production and administrative staff.
  • Administer the production calendar, coordinate and conduct all design and production meetings, load-in, and tech schedules. Manage deadlines for production staff and guide teams to guarantee timely completion of all designs.
  • Serve as liaison to labor unions for actors, stage managers, and designers. Ensure company compliance with all union rules.
  • Act as a liaison between production staff and Executive Artistic Director in the case that there are any production department-related claims for Workers' Compensation.
  • Maintain a safe work environment during productions at all times. Address safety hazards, monitor anonymous reporting forms and communicate with appropriate personnel promptly in the case of a concern.

Facilities

  • Oversee inventory and maintenance of all lighting and sound equipment, costumes, and props.
  • Organize and maintain on and off-site scenic and costume storage spaces.
  • Oversee all production supply stocking.
  • Complete laundry and dry-cleaning needs for costumes during productions.
  • Attend strike for every production and oversee the plan for deconstructing sets and disposing of materials with the technical director and appropriate personnel.
  • Insure MOXIE property is returned to storage and borrowed or rented materials are returned to owners.
  • Assist as needed in scenic construction/painting.
  • Obtain off-site rehearsal space as needed.

Requirements

Education/Experience and Skills:

  • Bachelor's degree in Theatre, Technical Theatre, Production Management, or related field, or equivalent combination of education and professional experience
  • Minimum 3 years of professional experience in theatre production management, stage management, or technical direction
  • Strong understanding of all technical theatre disciplines: lighting, sound, scenic construction, costumes, and props
  • Understanding of technical rider requirements and load-in procedures
  • Knowledge of OSHA safety standards and theatrical safety best practices
  • Experience with budget development and expense tracking

Desirable Qualities:

  • Exceptional organizational skills with keen attention to detail.
  • Ability to manage multiple projects with competing deadlines simultaneously.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to assist with physical load-out, which can involve lifting and moving equipment up to 50 pounds.
  • Comfortable working on ladders, with hand-tools and small power-tools, and in technical spaces.
  • Reliable transportation to access off-site storage facilities.

Schedule & Availability:

  • Combination of remote administrative work and in-person presence at theatre (San Diego College Area)
  • Flexible schedule with required evening and weekend work, particularly during tech weeks, previews, opening nights, and strike.
