Our Recreation Specialists work as a team to create, facilitate, and adapt activities for Day Center participants ages 18+. We provide an inclusive, fun, unique, caring, and family-like environment for our participants to enjoy while their caregivers are at work during the day.

Starting pay rate: $16.92

Monday-Friday - no weekends

Recreation Specialist Principal Accountabilities

Client Services:

  1. Plan and facilitate meaningful individual and group recreational activities that foster socialization, relationship building and engagement, and are aligned with participants' interest, hobbies, and strengths.

  2. Coordinate community-based activities onsite and in the broader community ensuring the opportunities are accessible, inclusive, meaningful to participants, and provide necessary support to ensure successful participation.

  3. Adapt and modify all activities to enhance participation and ensure success.

  4. Apply a person-centered approach that respects each participant's abilities, preferences, and needs.

  5. Ensure all participant documentation is accurate, complete, current, and in compliance with regulatory requirements and agency standards.

  6. Promote respect and choice for all participants.

  7. Provide direct care assistance to participants, as needed, as outlined in an individualized care plan.

  8. Build and maintain supportive relationships with participants and their formal/informal support networks.

  9. Observe and report changes in participants' conditions or behaviors promptly and professionally.

  10. Contribute to planning and evaluation of activity programming, health monitoring, and individual goals and outcomes for participants.

  11. Comply with all regulatory requirements and agency standards.

  12. Communicate in a respectful, culturally competent, and professional manner.

  13. Attend required team meetings, training sessions, and professional development opportunities.

  14. Maintain a clean, organized, and safe facility environment.

General Management:

  1. Work closely with Program Supervisor to assist in coordination, orientation, training, and oversight of program volunteers.

  2. Comply within the program budget when planning events and purchasing program supplies.

Recreation Specialist Qualifications

  • High School diploma or equivalent required.

  • One or more years of experience planning and implementing organized recreational activities with the population served preferred.

  • Effective communication skills, both verbal and written

  • Demonstrated strong organizational skills and time management skills in a fast-paced environment.

  • Ability to lift 25 to 50 pounds and tolerate medium to high physical effort including walking, standing, stooping, squatting, bending, reaching, pushing, and /or pulling.

  • Ability to follow directions, organize and prioritize work assignments.

  • Effectively collaborate and problem solve with co-workers to ensure quality care.

  • Ability to understand and follow individual participant care plans.

  • Ability to respectfully approach and provide positive redirection for individuals who have various diagnoses.

  • Ability to be flexible and meet the needs of participants and the program.

  • Valid driver's license, proof of auto insurance, and a satisfactory driving record are required.

  • 1+ years of experience planning and implementing organized recreational activities with adults who have physical and/or cognitive disabilities, mental health diagnosis, or dementia/Alzheimer's.

  • Effective communication skills, both verbal and written.
  • Ability to work effectively in a fast-paced team environment.
  • Ability to lift 25 to 50 pounds and tolerate medium to high physical effort including walking, standing, stooping, squatting, bending, reaching, pushing, and /or pulling.
  • Ability to follow directions, organize and prioritize work assignments.
