Work Environment: Onsite in a clinical setting.

From neck to toe, and from traumatic injuries to chronic conditions, patients will receive compassionate care that will allow them to embrace their full potential. Patient goals are our goals – we will restore their health so they are functioning as fully as possible in the activities they love at home, work, and in everyday life.

Position Summary

As a Certified/Registered Medical Assistant 2 at OAM, your daily duties will vary depending on the doctor and specialty you are working with, but the excellent care you provide patients will remain the same no matter where you are stationed within the company. You will support Physicians, mid-level providers, RNs, Athletic Trainers, etc. with providing the best patient care possible and assist with clerical and administrative tasks related to the patient.

Clinical Duties:

  • Work under the direction of the Physician and/or mid-level provider to facilitate care and assures that patient needs are met.
  • Prepare rooms prior to appointments by setting out appropriate supplies.
  • Prepare the patient prior to being seen by the Physician.
  • Welcome patients into the back office and bring them to exam rooms.
  • Obtain information about the patients' chief complaints
  • Collect and update medical history.
  • Record documentation through the electronic medical record software (i.e. NextGen).
  • Take and record vital signs and draw up injections per protocol.
  • Remove staple/sutures and splints, dress and treat wounds, cast patient extremities, etc. as appropriate.*
  • Perform and document blood draws, using electronic order submissions as appropriate.*
  • Educate and reinforce the importance of the Physicians' instructions to patients (i.e. activity limitation, wound care, braces, studies/blood work, medications, medical equipment, etc.)
  • Maintain a cleanly and safe environment for patients.
  • Remain knowledgeable on updated OSHA guidelines and protocols.
  • Monitor the cleanliness and sterility of instruments and equipment used in the office.
  • Maintain the autoclave as assigned.
  • Dispose of soiled dressings and used sharps appropriately.
  • Clean rooms and equipment between patients and at the end of the day.
  • Restock rooms.
  • Advocate for the patient and family members. Make everyone feel heard and understood.
  • Handle confidential information in accordance with HIPAA guidelines.
  • Adheres to Clinical Treatment and Communication Documentation Standard Operating Procedure.
  • Adheres to the Controlled Substance Workflow and Documentation Protocol.*
  • Assist in training new employees within the scope of job duties.

Administrative Duties:

  • Review patient charts and ensure that all films, reports, and records necessary for visits are organized prior to appointments.
  • Review what x-rays are needed at the time of visit.
  • Schedule outside studies and make referrals as ordered by the Physician.
  • Obtains appropriate authorizations.
  • Follow up on studies to ensure they were scheduled and completed.
  • Ensure follow up appointments are scheduled as needed.
  • Communicate with OAM team members and outside providers as needed in order to ensure patients are receiving the best possible care from injury to rehabilitation.
  • Enroll, assist, and educate patients on the patient portal. Use the patient portal to communicate with patients.
  • Copy and send signed medication and therapy prescriptions, physical therapy protocols, handouts for patient instructions, and requested medical records as signed and directed by the Physician.
  • Complete fee tickets in a timely and accurate manner so that patients are billed correctly.
  • Answer and respond to patient calls in the telephone triage.
  • Sort and distribute Physician mail, if appropriate.
  • Perform other duties or functions as assigned.

Required & Preferred Qualifications

Education, Training, and Experience:

  • Required:
  • High School diploma or GED.
  • Graduate of an accredited Medical Assistant program or equivalent coursework in nursing or health care.
  • Current Medical Assistant Certification or Registration, or the ability to maintain certification or registration within first 120 days of employment.
  • Completed competency-based orientation program and CPR certification (BLS), the ability to maintain certification within 90 days of employment.
  • Preferred:
  • 1+ years of Medical Assisting or other applicable patient care experience.
  • Experience in the orthopedic field.
  • Experience working in NextGen.

  • Working knowledge of computers and relevant applications, including electronic health records.

Motor, Sensory, and Physical Requirements:

  • Ability to sit and/or stand for long periods of time.
  • Frequent walking, bending, stooping, lifting (of up to 50 pounds), and reaching required.
  • Ability to use appropriate body mechanics and techniques when making necessary patient transfers (i.e. helping patients walk, dress, etc.)
  • Manual dexterity required to operate modern office equipment.
  • Normal or correctable range of hearing and eyesight.
