Position Summary:
Primarily responsible for providing the safety of TLD property during the daytime and possibly after-hours. Is familiar with and comply with TLD standards and procedures. Also watch, listen, and report any unusual, illegal, or dangerous activities occurring on the premises.
Patrols all areas of the property. Able to monitor cameras, I.P. camera system, perimeter, alarm systems, and fire & life safety systems.
Tasks, Duties, and Responsibilities:
- Consistently adhere to all TLD and department policies and procedures.
- Conduct regular patrols of the property's interior grounds and perimeter.
- Patrol buildings, parking lots, gates, and other designated areas as needed or assigned. Able to monitor cameras, I.P. camera system, perimeter, alarm systems, and fire & life safety systems.
- Ensure all doors and buildings are secure; lock any open or unlocked areas.
- Respond promptly to alarms, both during daytime and after hours.
- Coordinate with and support Public Safety agencies as needed.
- Communicate with relevant departments for after-hours emergencies or issues.
- Assist with necessary medical supplies are ordered and maintained for all staff and areas across the Zoo, while keeping Safety supply and storage areas functional and well-organized.
- Provide safety training, including golf cart safety, pepper spray, fire extinguisher, stop the bleed and all other related department training courses for TLD team members.
- May be asked to become First Aid and CPR/AED Instructor certified.
- Provide First Aid and CPR to guests or staff in need of medical assistance.
- Assist guests with transportation to their vehicles or the gift shop as needed.
- Escort Vendors and Contractors that need access to zoo grounds and see that they are held to safe operations while on TLD grounds.
- May need to conduct accident investigations to identify root cause and generate recommendations to reduce or eliminate hazards and perform follow-up inspections to verify effectiveness/resolution.
- May be asked to conduct/facilitates job safety and other technical analyses.
- Offer directions and answer any questions guests may have.
- Proactively monitor and address guest behaviors to prevent potential safety concerns.
- Provide additional support for day and night events, including TLD Gala, event dinners, or luncheons for the zoo.
- Leads Park clearing and closing procedures at the end of the day and reports any information to MOD/Base.
- Must be able to identify problems using investigative processes to analyze and evaluate complex information and ability to utilize creativity, innovation, best judgment, and logical reasoning to resolve these problems.
- Assist in checking safety equipment and materials are in good working order and up to current standards. Checking AED's, First Aid Cabinets, Stop the Bleed kits, Fire Extinguishers, emergency lights and exits, and all other related department checks.
- Provide reports and observations after every shift.
- Assist with creating training material and hands-on training for staff.
- Will assist with presenting in orientations, presentations, and onboarding training.
- Assist with managing and maintaining SDS and Hazard Communication program.
- Will help with maintaining records and documents in compliance with all regulatory and internal record keeping requirements and provides statistical data on safety performance. Prepares and submits regulatory reports, notifications, and communications with their leadership.
- Demonstrate strong organizational skills to ensure timely completion of assignments and responsibilities.
- Balance short-term tasks with long-term projects, ensuring consistent progress and completion across all areas of responsibility.
- Collaborate with team members and departments to ensure workflow efficiency and adherence to timelines.
- Contribute to a positive and respectful team environment by offering support, sharing knowledge, and communicating openly.
- Demonstrate flexibility and a willingness to assist team members as needed to meet deadlines and organizational objectives.
Requirements
Qualifications:
- 2 to 4 years of experience in a similar role.
- High school diploma or equivalent, required.
- Current Private security officer licensed or Guard card or must obtain within 6 months of hiring. License will also need to be maintained during employment.
- Certificate on first aid, CPR and AED, Stop the bleed, and IBCCES training or obtained within 120 days of employment.
- Good communication skills; oral and written.
- Attentive to details.
- Computer skills.
- Valid California driver license.
- Must be insurable on The Living Desert's automobile policy.

The team member must regularly lift and/or move up to 15 pounds and frequently lift and/or move up to 50 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus.
DISCOMFORT/RISKS: Work involves exposure to elements, such as extreme temperature, dirt, dust, fumes, smoke, unpleasant odors, and/or loud noises. Work environment involves some exposure to hazards or physical risks, which require basic safety precautions.
HOLIDAY/ EVENING WORK: Ability to work nights, evenings, weekends, and holidays and/or irregular hours. Ability to handle situations where the team member may encounter potentially abusive/threatening people/animals in enforcement of regulations/animal escapes.
TRAVEL: Occasional conference and workshop attendance potentially available.
