Summary

The main function of the National Team Athletic Trainer is to serve as the fulltime and onsite provider and manager of medical support for USA Boxing's High Performance (HP) teams under the supervision of the HP Director administratively and HP Medical Director medically and clinically. This position works closely with all high performance athletes, staff, coaches, medical committee, and medical volunteers, as well as the US Olympic & Paralympic Committee's Sports Medicine department to successfully fulfill all duties and responsibilities of the role

Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Deliver high performance health care adhering to the practice standards of athletic trainers including, but not limited to, injury prevention, immediate care, examination, assessment, diagnosis, therapeutic intervention, organization, and administration.
  • Provide for patient care activities as needed in accordance with scope of practice, standards and functions of his/her individual professional licensure, job description and standards for appropriate practice, including clinical competency and documentation. Patient care will be delivered ethically and empathetically at all times.
  • Work collaboratively and communicate with HP Head Team Physicians and staff about ongoing injuries and prevention of potential injuries through programming with strength & conditioning and other avenues of medical care. Must maintain appropriate compliance with federal and state privacy laws.
  • Refer to, and accept referrals from, medical team members including physicians, chiropractors, sports psychologist, nutritionists, physical therapists, certified athletic trainers, USOPC Sports Performance staff and others. Be the main point of contact for any national team members or training partners regarding their physical & mental health.
  • Maintain compliance with medical/legal requirements for the States of employment as well as any other states in which the individual supports USA Boxing at sporting events or activities.
  • Maintain compliance with IOC, WADA, USADA, Safe Sport, and the Olympic Code to provide for maximum sports performance from each athlete. Act as USA Boxing's primary representative for all matters related to anti-doping.
  • Assist in developing and maintaining professional working relationships to enhance and expand USA Boxing's medical pool for physicians, athletic trainers, and physical therapists.
  • Work with HP Head Team Physicians to build and provide a comprehensive medical volunteer orientation for training and event coverage.
  • Attend all training sessions at training camps to monitor health and wellbeing of athletes.
  • Travel extensively with National Teams, providing medical support during competitions held both domestically and internationally.
  • Assist national team athletes in relation to scheduling appointments including orthopedic, dental, mental health, nutrition, physical therapy, and massage therapy as appropriate to the performance of the national team members.
  • Record and enter athlete medical data into electronic medical record system in a timely manner for maintenance of athlete medical records. Maintain update to athlete profiles in the USOPC EMR.
  • Collaborate with HP Head Team Physicians, physicians, Assistant High Director - Sport Performance, and USOPC Sports Performance Team Members to develop and implement comprehensive rehabilitation programs for injured athletes.
  • Coordinate communication between athlete, coaching staff, HP Head Team Physicians, and personal coaches to follow-up on injuries or other medical concerns that may have occurred during training camp or competition.
  • Develop and maintain medical Emergency Action Plans for all training venues as needed and review with staff prior to the start of each training camp or competition.
  • Maintaining & updating the Sports Medicine Policy and Procedure manual
  • Initiate insurance claims for injuries that will be covered by USA Boxing. Activate the USOPC Medical Network and provide all necessary documentation required for any indicated referrals.
  • Maintain an up to date inventory of all medical supplies in the USA Boxing gym. Oversee the re-ordering of all medical supplies. Submit an annual budget for medical supplies & equipment. Ensure that all medical kits & recovery bags are fully stocked and operational for all foreign and domestic competitions & training camps.
  • Collaborate with HP Head Team Physicians and High Performance Staff in the policy making decisions relative to sports medicine, including medical protocols as they relate to USA Boxing National Team operations.
  • Develop educational materials for USA Boxing coaching education platforms. Engage in the development of USA Boxing Medical Symposium, upon request.

This job description is intentionally broad regarding the medically/clinically relevant roles and responsibilities as the scope of practice and practice standards for this specific job will be dependent on the training level of the employee filling this role (PT vs ATC). Thus, the level and situation appropriate medical practice standards and scope of practice are defined appropriately and in detail separately by the HP Medical Director and approved by the HP Medical Committee physicians annually for the individual currently filling the described job for USA Boxing.

Qualifications

Education:

  • Bachelor's degree or higher in Athletic Training or other sports medicine field.

Licensure & Certifications:

  • Current Health Care Provider CPR certification
  • Licensure or certification in good standing as an Athletic Trainer in the state of Colorado (or ability to obtain this licensure)
  • American Heart Association or American Red Cross Certification for CPR/AED and willingness to obtain instructor certification
  • CSCS Certification preferred

US Olympic & Paralympic Training Center Credentialing Requirements:

  • Must have been continuously certified by the Board of Certification (BOC) for at least three years.
  • Ability to complete and pass a background check (including professional credential review) through the USOPC as described in the USOPC Background Check & Procedures (available upon request)
  • No previous convictions of a felony or any conviction of healthcare fraud
  • No previous actions, sanctions, or discipline on clinical privileges or employment as a result of sexual abuse, harassment, or substance abuse.
  • Current USADA anti-doping training certification (Biennial)
  • Current Safe Sport certification (Yearly)

Experience:

  • Minimum of 2 years' experience working in elite level combat, NCAA or professional sports
  • Previous high performance experience with NGB or the US Olympic & Paralympic Committee preferred

Position Type: Exempt, Regular, Full-time

Reports to: High Performance Director & High Performance Head Team Physicians

Starting Salary: $65,000-$70,000

Supervisory Role: National Team Athletic Training Fellow

Working conditions: Significant overtime is likely required during and leading up to major events

Non-traditional work hours depending on high performance schedule

Travel is required several times a year; some trips could be 4-6 weeks.
