JOB TITLE: Director of Bands
JOB BRIEF:
- This supplemental position provides leadership and direction for the Manhattan High School band program. The Director of Bands serves as the primary instructor and point of contact for designated band ensembles while maintaining oversight and coordination of all six bands. The role is responsible for shaping a positive, inclusive program culture; aligning instructional and performance goals across all directors; and promoting the growth, visibility, and sustainability of the instrumental performing arts program at Manhattan High School, within the district, and throughout the community.
LOCATION: Manhattan High School
QUALIFICATIONS:
- Kansas Teaching License.
- Degree from an accredited college or university.
- All USD 383 employees must pass a background check.
TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT/SALARY:
- This is a supplemental position assigned in conjunction with a full-time music teaching position at Manhattan High School.
- Supplemental compensation is set at $8,208 for the school year in accordance with the negotiated agreement.
- The supplemental amount will be determined at a later date.
REPORTS TO: Building Principal
PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Build and sustain a welcoming and inclusive program culture that supports student engagement, recruitment, and retention.
- Direct high school instrumental ensembles—including marching band, concert bands, and festival/audition groups—and support instruction at both the high school and middle schools.
- Plan, coordinate, and schedule all concerts, performances, extracurricular events, and community appearances.
- Plan and oversee all travel, including logistics, supervision, and major out-of-town/state trips.
- Establish and enforce academic, performance, and eligibility requirements for all students.
- Design instruction, lessons, and assessments that meet student needs and align with district, KSHSAA, and KMEA guidelines.
- Collaborate with district performing arts programs and school departments to support aligned programming and shared events.
- Manage program purchasing, fundraising, and budgeting in accordance with district fiscal procedures.
- Maintain inventory and oversee care, repair, storage, and distribution of instruments, equipment, uniforms, and music libraries.
- Select, distribute, and manage musical literature in compliance with copyright and district policies.
- Use program and student achievement data to guide continuous improvement and refine program procedures.
- Maintain open and professional communication with students, families, staff, and administration; manage online information platforms.
- Promote the band program through community relations, news outlets, social media, and collaboration with FPA and MHS Booster Club.
- Assist with recruitment, supervision, and evaluation of assistant band directors; foster a strong team-teaching environment.
- Ability to work under varied conditions—including evenings, outdoor settings, and travel to performances—as required.
- Perform other related duties as assigned by administration.
FLSA STATUS: Exempt
EVALUATION: Performance will be evaluated annually in accordance with the Board of Education's policy on evaluation of certified personnel.
