The

Multnomah County Community Health Center

provides quality health services for people who experience barriers to accessing care. Our vision is to provide services that are integrated and connected to support optimal health, reducing wait times, and optimizing access.

The Certified Medical Coding Specialist analyzes coding, charges and provider documentation for Primary Care, Behavioral Health and Dental Services with the goal of optimizing revenue, ensuring compliant coding practices, and increasing the volume of accurate claims for reimbursement.

As the Certified Medical Coding Specialist, you will:

  • Review and analyze Primary Care, Behavioral Health and Dental charts to ensure accurate clinical coding and charges based on provider documentation.
  • Ensure services billed are compliant with applicable rules and regulations, internal policies and procedures, payer requirements and federal guidelines related to professional fee services.
  • Use knowledge of clinical documentation practices, Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA) and Federally Qualified Health Center (FQHC) methodology.
  • Interpret and resolve coding and documentation errors related to denials, charge review and claim edits, and Clearinghouse rejections.
  • Provide customer service by telephone, email, Epic In-box, and in-person to clinic office staff, providers and other Health Center personnel to aid them in understanding healthcare reimbursement, documentation and coding/charges.
  • Assist in the internal development of policies and procedures related to coding, billing, documentation, and re-billing to meet department and external partner requirements.
  • Present applicable communications, reports, job aids, guidance documents in collaboration with the Revenue Cycle Supervisor and other colleagues to staff, providers, internal partners and/or leadership as required related to coding department functions and activities.
  • Attend relevant meetings which may include staff from areas such as Accounts Receivable, Billings, Operations and/or clinical personnel.
  • Coordinate efforts to resolve technical and operational issues that arise.
  • Using an equity lens and a trauma-informed approach in listening and providing guidance for understanding, improvement and most advantageous result for staff involved and the Health Centers.

Minimum Qualifications/Transferable Skills*:

Any combination of experience and training that would likely provide the knowledge and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the knowledge and abilities would be as noted below. All non-traditional education, training and experience will be evaluated.

Education/Training: Equivalent to an associates degree; AND

Experience: Two (2) years experience coding for outpatient provider services.

Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities (KSA): Certified Coder through AAPC, AHIMA or equivalent.

Preferred Qualifications/ Transferable Skills*: You do not need to have the following preferred qualifications/ transferable skills to qualify. However, keep in mind we may consider some or all of the following when identifying the most qualified candidates.   • Experience working in an FQHC (Federally Qualified Health Center) environment
  • Experience with Epic EHR systems/ processes

Location: Gladys McCoy Building: 619 NW 6th Ave Portland OR This position is eligible for routine telework, however the incumbent must reside in Oregon or Washington.

Schedule: Monday - Friday 8am - 5pm (Flexible work schedule available)
