The employee in this class provides security and patrol functions to enforce rules, regulations, codes of conduct, and City ordinances. The employee in this class, under general supervision, patrols the Everett Public Library buildings, parking areas and grounds to provide security and safety for staff, library patrons and the general public. A high priority of this position is providing excellent customer service while responding to disruptions caused by members of the public not following the library rules of conduct and responding to smoke/vape sensors in the public restrooms. The employee will patrol and monitor library property to enforce laws and regulations and codes of conduct, prevent and check for property damage, and identify potential safety hazards.
Knowledge of the principles and methods of building and grounds security is required. The employee is responsible for rendering first aid to the general public or employees and for determining if emergency treatment is necessary. Specific guidelines including laws, regulations, City policies, and procedures exist; however, the employee must exercise judgment in determining the appropriate guideline to apply. The work is performed independently with general direction from a supervisor. Contacts include Everett Public Library staff, library patrons, law enforcement/emergency medical services officials, and the general public for the purpose of providing security, regulation enforcement, assistance, and exchange of information.

About The Job
Employees in this class provide unarmed security and patrol functions to enforce rules, regulations, codes of conduct, and City ordinances on City property. Employees in this class, under general supervision, patrol assigned City properties to provide security and safety for the employees, visitors, tenants, and property. Priorities for this position include maintaining a presence to deter rules of conduct violations, addressing incidents, de-escalating situations, and treating individuals with dignity and respect.
Knowledge of the principles and methods of physical, building, and grounds security is required. Specific guidelines including laws, regulations, City policies, and procedures exist; however, the employee must exercise judgment in determining the appropriate guideline to apply. The work is performed independently with general direction from a supervisor. Contacts include City staff, occupants, law enforcement officials, and the general public for the purpose of providing security, regulation enforcement, assistance, and exchange of information.
ILLUSTRATIVE EXAMPLES OF WORK
- Patrol the property and monitor surveillance systems in designated areas to enforce regulations and codes of conduct, prevent and check for property damage, and identify potential safety hazards.
- Respond to security or emergency situations and contact appropriate staff, law enforcement or other emergency personnel. Secure facilities at end of shift.
- Maintain routine records and statistics and prepare written reports. Prepare accurate, clear, and comprehensive activity, incident and service reports.
- Report malfunctioning of electrical equipment and report buildings or grounds in need of maintenance or repair.
Minimum Education And Experience Requirements
- Requires high school graduation or equivalent AND a minimum of one year security work experience, OR
- Any combination of training or experience providing the requisite knowledge, skills, and abilities.
- Valid Washington State Driver License within 30 days of hir-.
Special Requirements Or Certifications
- Successful completion of an extensive background check, which includes a psychological evaluation.
- Complete and maintain CPR and first aid certification within six (6) months of hire and maintain.

EXAMINATION STEPS
- There will be a pre-screening of all applications.
- Responses to the supplemental questionnaire will be individually reviewed and evaluated (weighted 30%). Treat these questions as a TEST.
- Top-scoring applicants will be called to an oral panel interview (weighted 70%). Tentatively scheduled for the week of January 19th, 2025.
- All vacancies in this job class will be filled from the ranked Civil Service register established from the examination process for 12 months.
IMPORTANT NOTES
- A passing grade of 70.00 or higher is required on all parts of the screening process for placement on the ranked Civil Service eligible register.
- The examination process is designed to sample and measure the requisite knowledge, skills, and abilities.
- Applicants claiming veterans' preference points in accordance with RCW as amended and meeting eligibility criteria must submit form DD214 or other official military separation documentation that clearly indicates an honorable discharge from military service on or before the date filing closes.
- Extensive background checks will be conducted.
- Hiring offers are contingent upon successful completion of a City-paid medical evaluation.
- New hires begin employment at the first step of the salary range.
