At Geni, we're inventing the future of play. Our mission is to build physical products that bring artificial intelligence and generative storytelling to the hands of every child in the world.

We are a small team of designers and engineers from MIT and Harvard who believe play should spark curiosity and drive learning. We are building a storytelling toy that lets kids create endless audio adventures with the help of AI.

Role Description

We're looking for a pragmatic builder who's excited about making weird, wonderful, physical AI products come to life. You will build APIs, set-up infrastructure, and help us make the Geni experience magical and safe for kids and parents. If you like to quickly prototype, ship, learn, and iterate, this role is for you. 

Responsibilities

  • Backend & APIs: Build secure, scalable APIs and core services for multi-device, high-volume usage.
  • Cloud Infrastructure: Design and manage our cloud setup (AWS/GCP), with monitoring, logging, and alerting.
  • LLM & TTS integration: Improve our AI-powered storytelling pipeline by optimizing prompts, reducing latency, and building output guardrails.
  • Data & Safety: Implement monitoring, telemetry, and data pipelines to track performance, reliability, and family trust.
  • Technical Leadership: As the founding engineer, you will set coding standards, make key trade-offs, and help shape the engineering culture from day one.

Qualifications

  • Software engineer with a track record of shipping production systems.
  • Deep familiarity with cloud-native architecture (AWS/GCP/Azure), databases, APIs, CI/CD pipelines, and modern dev practices.
  • Hands-on experience with LLM integrations, text-to-speech, and/or dialogue systems.
  • Proficient in setting up monitoring and data pipelines for live systems.
  • Startup experience (0→1 or early-stage product development) strongly preferred.

Bonus Skills

  • Full-stack capability, with comfort across backend, infra, and some frontend.
  • Familiarity with frontend frameworks (React or similar).
  • Experience with mobile app development (Swift, React Native, iOS or Android).
