This position requires an in-depth understanding of the unique needs of a high-achieving, diverse student population in a rigorous pre-medical curriculum.

Located within the Center for Academic Success, the Senior Academic Advisor offers proactive and developmentally appropriate guidance that supports student success, persistence, and professional development. In addition to student-facing responsibilities, the role includes administrative and programmatic support such as committee participation, data reporting, and contributions to program development initiatives.

Key Responsibilities:

Academic Advisement and Student Support:

  • Provide individualized, holistic advisement that extends beyond course planning to include academic, personal, and professional development support.
  • Meet with each student at least once per semester (in addition to pre-registration advising) to review academic progress, update degree plans, discuss extracurricular and experiential learning opportunities (e.g., study abroad), and address any academic or personal concerns.
  • Conduct detailed reviews of student records, including transcripts (transfer, AP, IB, and UNM credit), to ensure timely progress toward graduation and fulfillment of BA/MD and SOM prerequisites.
  • Monitor mid-semester progress and final grades and assess student standing in relation to program requirements. Develop and implement individualized success plans for students on academic probation or in jeopardy of program release.
  • Teach HMHV 2993 – a one credit hour workshop for first year cohort to orient to program policies, procedure, academic integrity, learning strategies growth, self-care resources, health education, etc. each semester.

Program Oversight and Development:

  • Participate actively in program committees and strategic planning discussions to enhance student retention, engagement, and academic success such as BA/MD Committee on Curriculum and Student Progress (CCSP), assessment committee and Eligibility & Professionalism subcommittee.
  • Lead key student support programming, such as the Foundations of Science Learning Academy, BA/MD orientation, First Year Friday, the BA/MD Wellness Initiative, and weekly "program meeting time" delivering student support in the areas of academic support resources, undergraduate research, MCAT preparation and SOM admission eligibility.
  • Assist with coordination and execution of BA/MD events, including BA/MD Olympics, Preview Day, A&S and SOM graduation ceremonies, and lectures (up to 10 events and 2–8 student meetings per academic year).
  • Contribute to the development and maintenance of program publications and communications, including student handbooks, web content, newsletters, course flyers, and graduation programs.

Reporting and Data Management:

  • Compile, analyze, and report on student academic performance data (e.g., semester GPAs, MCAT scores, standardized testing trends) for internal and external program stakeholders.
  • Develop and present evaluative reports and recommendations to support decision-making and continuous improvement of advising practices and student outcomes.

Professional Development and Continuous Learning:

  • Engage in ongoing training and in-service learning to stay current with university advising practices, academic policy changes, and evolving student needs.

Additional Duties:

  • Occasionally work evening or weekend hours for student events and programming.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.

Core Competencies:

  • Student-focused service orientation
  • Attention to detail and strong follow-through
  • Ability to multitask and prioritize competing responsibilities
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office and database systems
  • Collaborative mindset and cultural sensitivity
